well,
i don't know how this thread got so off-topic so fast
but after more discussion in chat,

the bottom line here is NOT TO IMPOSE
a standard on anyone,

I'm am going to assume that you are referring to the Hexadyne Consortium
discussion. As I understand it (Joel may be able to explain better than I,
since it's his baby)

actually, your explaination is extremely well-worded!  I'm not sure if he is
referring to the Consortium or not, the original post was about everybody
here in .space using the same shape and size of airlock to connect ships,
and I think he was talking about that.

as for the Consortium as you described it, there is only one thing you
stated that I'm not sure if I explained it clearly since I've seen people
mention it a few times...

the Consortium is a voluntary guild which developes
standards in order to fairly conduct racing events on an even platform. Only
those people who wish to enter the racing events are required to abide by
the Standards.
(snip)

the Consortium will be running 3 distinctly different types of contest
during the Hex Games, as well as during regularly occuring events:

Race, Battle, and Voting contests.

The Race will be the rarest type of contest, and is open to all types of
vehicles.  weapons are NOT allowed during the race, so ships designed
primarily for speed will have an advantage.

The Battles will obviously involve weapons, so unarmed ships will not be
allowed to enter.  Battles will be decided when one side is either
incapacitated or surrenders.

Voting contests will be running almost all the time, and will focus more on
the style and design of the actual vehicle's look.  Visitors to the page
will vote to decide the winners.

There will also be best-in-class awards for ships with outstanding stats in
certain categories.

the contests will be divided into classes based on ship cost, which roughly
coincides with ship size. (however, a very high-tech small ship may get
paired up against a low-tech large ship for example... and that will make
for some interesting battles...)

cheers!
Joel K

(...) Thank you. (...) That is the aspect of the Consortium that I am most likely to participate in. I am not overly concerned with the competition. I feel that I would rarely enter my ships.
