Hi all,

With the announcement today of the NHL agreement, there is added impetus to
rename lugnet.football (lugnet.soccer) to be lugnet.sports, to encompass
football/soccer, the NBA sets, future NHL sets, and any potential future
sports themes.  Actually I would include the extreme sports under that >>>theme too, so things like those skateboard sets.

I think so too, but with the (more international) name "sport" instead of
"sports"...  i.e.:

  lugnet.sport

The official name Lego uses is "LEGO Sports".  I don't know if this matters
in the naming of it. I don't mind either way - I am just being nit-pickety. :-)

with the potential for sub-expansion, for example:

  lugnet.sport.basketball
  lugnet.sport.football
  lugnet.sport.hockey

Considering how many subthemes the space and castle theme have, and
considering that all co-exist in the same group, (except for ninja and SW) I
would just recommend the global .sport(s) newsgroup and keep it simple.  I
couldn't imagine more that 20 posts a month in each subgroup, but as a whole
they could co-exist in one group and maybe even create a whole community of
sports builders/enthusiats - creating more interesting discussions.

Now if you look backward in the .suggestions group, you will see my original
suggestion for this to be implemented.  The post that ispired my original
suggestion was not the big NBA announcement, but a lugneter showing off his
(American) football team.  If you create a compartmentalized newsgroup,
where do the people who build outside the official themes go?  If I were to
build a baseball stadium, assuming my ideas are what happens, I could put it
in .sport(s), but with the compartmentalization of the .sport(s) group, I
wouldn't have a home for the announcement and subsequent discussions.

(I am not against the unstated standard of a newsgroup for every theme that
Todd and Suz have used - but in some cases you need to decide where to draw
the line between theme and subtheme.  On a side note, I think the whole
.software newsgroup (yes one exists) shouldn't be so compartmentalized -
over compartmentalization kills good discussion.)

Works for me! The problem though is... what is football? With the
international flavor of the name you can make an excellent and valid
argument that football is soccer and not NFL.

This is a difficult decision to make... which may never need to be made.
Because the difference is so black and white - and since half of lugnet
resides on one side and the other on the other, this is a decision you
should avoid unless there is an absolute need for it.  This is another
reason for not compartmentalizing the .sport(s) group.

(if and when NFL ever gets licensed)

I thought basketball would have been impossible, so maybe there is a chance!

Also, I wonder if the names ought to go with the licenses?

lugnet.sport.NBA and lugnet.sport.NHL

rather than the sports themselves...

lugnet.sport.basketball and lugnet.sport.hockey

This conforms to the product names LEGO(r) chose right? It doesn't, I don't
think, help with soccer/football though.

Will the official theme name be NBA and NHL or will it be basketball and
hochey?  I could see a double standard developing here.

Finally will you be able to move existing groups or do you have to
close/archive and start anew? In the past IIRC you were able to perform magic.

This is a simple thing for people who think like computer programmers.  i am
sure this would be a "no sweat job" for Todd - being the genius he is.

(...) At least using a web browser as an interface, if you read the .castle group you see the .castle.ninja posts as well. So if a theme had subgroups for the subthemes they would all still show up in the more general group. Any other MOC that fell (...)
