There's actually a can of worms here... Why do we have this one count of
special pieces without any other special pieces counted?

Well, because that's the way Lou started it when he started it.  And it's a
very popular thing (as in, it's something that a lot of people care about
for some reason).  Something special about minifigs.

A possible
solution would be to add a 2nd field for number of large non-human
figures under which one would count R2-D2, Sebulba, Horses, Sharks, etc
(but not kittens, birds, snakes, bats etc). Then more complete data for
a reasonable category of special parts is being presented, and a good
solid line can be drawn. This is also a reasonable category to count
since there are standard retail sets which are esentially just
mini-figs. There aren't any standard retail sets which contain just one
other type of piece (other than bricks) (well, ok, there is base plates,
perhaps that category could be included, with a text field for
description of types).

Was hoping to (very long-term) get all of this data from parts inventories
of the sets.  That way, any type of piece can be looked up in this manner,
just as easily as a minifig.  This a long way out, though.

(...) Also, it's important enough at LSI that the count is listed in each set description in the LEGO Shop At Home catalog. This is actually what I suspected to be the original reason Lou tracked them, actually. -- joshua (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.database)

(...) My vote would be to keep the count of figures as the number of mini-figs (of course for Scala this should be the number of dolls, etc). I would not count Sebulba as a figure.
