Wow, cool!

Rene, I love your knights... the colored knights are really great! The
princess is sweet too. I like your magicians a lot!

Can you put up a sentence or two in english about them? I'm curious... :-)

Aye, an english description would be nice.  Great figs, though.  I especially
like the way you did the different colors for the knights.

the translator makes very crazy words, or do you know the

It's very difficult for me to translate some special names. But maybe are the
following description satisfactory:

1st pic: a Longswordman, a  Hellebardier and an Axe Oscillator

2nd pic: a free Bowman and a riding Bowman

3rd pic: a bridge builder and a Battleknight

4th pic: the Yellow Prince and a Guard Horsewoman

5th pic: a Protection Wizard, a Battle Magician and a Implorer

6th pic: The six keepers of the elements: Keeper of the Water (blue), Keeper
of the Fire (red), Keeper of the Earth (green), Keeper of the Life (yellow),
Keeper of the Death (black) and Keeper of the Air (white)

Please do not LOL if there are some crazy words in it, it would be very nice
if somebody could tell me the right words so I can put an english description

Of course I won't LOL! I'm an ESLer myself and I know e'zactly what you're
going through.

I'll try my best to help you out here, I'm not sure I'll get the right stuff
either... :-)

I've tried to let translate the names of the figs by babelfish.altavista. But
the translator makes very crazy words, or do you know the

But of course! He's my favorite, um, carrier.

1st pic: a Longswordman, a  Hellebardier and an Axe Oscillator

Longswordsman is fine. I think you mean Halberdier, and Axe Swinger.

2nd pic: a free Bowman and a riding Bowman

An Archer and a Mounted archer, probably.

3rd pic: a bridge builder and a Battleknight

A bridge builder (peasant? construction worker?) and a knight. :-)

4th pic: the Yellow Prince and a Guard Horsewoman

The Yellow Prince and the Mounted Guard (I don't think you have to say it's a
girl... we can tell :-)

5th pic: a Protection Wizard, a Battle Magician and a Implorer

The frst two are fine, but what do you mean by implorer? Maybe a conjurer?
(Conjuring is bringing spirits from the dead (or somewhere else :) )

6th pic: The six keepers of the elements: Keeper of the Water (blue), Keeper
of the Fire (red), Keeper of the Earth (green), Keeper of the Life (yellow),
Keeper of the Death (black) and Keeper of the Air (white)

Sounds good to me!

Well these descriptions are great, now I know who's who! HTH!

It's very difficult for me to translate some special names.
But maybe are the following description satisfactory:

1st pic: a Longswordman,

"...a swordsman..."

a  Hellebardier

"...a halberdier..." [?]
("halberd" being the English name for the large pole-axe)

and an Axe Oscillator

"...an axeman..."
(Please forgive me,
but I had to chuckle when I read "oscillator".
I have an oscillating fan atop my desk at work.)

2nd pic: a free Bowman and a riding Bowman

"...an archer and a mounted archer..."

By "free", perhaps you meant a "yeoman"
(as in "a yeoman archer")?

3rd pic: a bridge builder

"...an engineer..."

and a Battleknight

"...an armored knight..."

4th pic: the Yellow Prince

As opposed to "the Black Prince" (Prince Edward,
IIRC my lessons in English history) ?...  ;-)

and a Guard Horsewoman

"...a female knight..."
or, "...a female cavalier..."

5th pic: a Protection Wizard,

"...an abjurationer..."/"...an abjurationist..."
(if you don't mind treading on the toes
of a certain RPG-producing company ;-)

a Battle Magician,

"Battle-mage" sounds just fine to me.
(Of course, you could always use the term "sorceror"
if you don't mind the evil connotations...)

and a Implorer

"...a Conjurer..."

6th pic: The six keepers of the elements:
Keeper of the Water (blue),
Keeper of the Fire (red),
Keeper of the Earth (green),
Keeper of the Life (yellow),
Keeper of the Death (black)
and Keeper of the Air (white)

errr....

For the four traditional elements,
Air, Earth, Fire, and Water,
you could call them "elementalists"
(as in "a fire elementalist", etc.).

Alternately,
I like to use "pyromancer" for a fire-mage,
and I've heard others use "hydromancer"
(for the water-mage),
and "aeromancer" (for the air-mage).
I can't think of an alternative for the earth-mage,
except maybe "druid", but that usually applies
much more for a nature-priest/mage than an earth-mage.

As far as the other two,
I'd use "necromancer" for the death-mage,
and "healer"/"healing adept"/"healing priest"
for the "life"-mage.

Please do not LOL if there are some crazy words in it,
it would be very nice if somebody could tell me the right words
so I can put an english description to the pictures.

I dont know about you guys but a Bowman Sounds pretty cool!

3rd pic: a bridge builder and a Battleknight

A bridge builder (peasant? construction worker?) and a knight. :-)

Again Battleknight kind of gives some flavor to just regular old Knight

4th pic: the Yellow Prince and a Guard Horsewoman

The Yellow Prince and the Mounted Guard (I don't think you have to say it's a

5th pic: a Protection Wizard, a Battle Magician and a Implorer

I dont know about conjurers bringing spirits from the dead. I thought a
Conjurer could bring about anything from anywhere.

of the Fire (red), Keeper of the Earth (green), Keeper of the Life (yellow),
Keeper of the Death (black) and Keeper of the Air (white)

Keepers sound cool like in magic Maybe Keeper of the death should just
be "keeper of Death"

Druidess might fit well.  In fantasy games, they often have control over Earth,
Plant, and Animal magic.  The Druids in one of the early drafts of my Lego
wargame could cast Earth magic.

Thanks to all of the good translations. I think I know how the figures will be
called in English:

pic1:

"Longsword" - It's a swordsman with a long sword. He belongs to a company
which is called "Longswords" because of their long swords.

"Halberdier" - Thank you, Shiri and Franklin!

"Axe Swinger" - Also Thanks to Shiri

pic2:

"Yeoman Archer" - If "yeoman" means to be not dependent on strict rules. Thank
you, Franklin!

"Mounted Archer" - Thank you again, Shiri

pic3:

"Construction Worker" - He's from a company which builds bridges for troops
which are going to the battlefield. This company also builds defence ramparts.
In German those Companies are called "Schanzkompanie"

"Battlerider / Battle Horseman" - He's not only a knight. He belongs to a
company of Heavy Cavallary. But maybe you called them "Cavaliers"

pic4:

"The Yellow Prince"

"Guards Horsewoman" - I can't believe that that shall sounds crazy for you.
And, Shiri, YES, she IS a woman (I have 10 of them). She's one of the
bodyguards of the royal family.

pic5:

"Protection Wizard"

"Battle Mage"

"Summoner" - Thank you Chris, this is the right word. I have 5 of these guys
who controls snakes, bats, tomcats, scorpions and ravens (just the 5 little
animals from TLC)

pic6:

"Keeper of the Water"

"Keeper of the Fire"

"Keeper of the Earth"

"Keeper of Life"

"Keeper of Death"

"Keeper of the Air"

These guys are not really elemantalists, they also are not magic figs like
Druids or Necromancers. They are more priests who can do miracles in big
trouble.

Kind Regards, René

Well, it's not just for geomancers, but I've mentioned the "Gathering of the
Wise" once or twice, and I would eventually like to do it for CW.  It's sort
of like an annual* convention for wizards, sages, sorcerors, philosophers, and
other seekers of knowledge.  Wise folk from all over the world travel to
wherever it is being held to gather, exchange information, show off new spells
or enchantments, discuss their research, engage in academic politics, plot
against one another**, party hard at the local taverns***, and all sorts of
similar stuff.

I'm not ready to do this right now, of course, but it's something for all you
people with wizard-characters to keep in mind (and perhaps even work
references to into your storylines...)

J

* - not sure about it being annual...it might be every 5 or even 10 years,
depending.  Or it could be held whenever a full moon intersects with the star
Pecares in the Sigil of Omateion, a rare stellar junction...

** - but not act on those plots!  The Gathering is a 'neutral' zone where
wizards of all types may meet freely, without fear of coming under attack by
their enemies.

*** - The locals might welcome the Gathering at first because of all the money
it brings in, but they often come to regret their decision after finding out
what several score of drunken mages can do to a town in the name of "fun".
There's a reason the Gathering moves every year...

Well, that's not what my dictionary says... Yeoman:
"An attendant, a servant, or a lesser official in a royal or noble household.
A yeoman of the guard. (1)
A petty officer performing chiefly clerical duties in the U.S. Navy.
An assistant or other subordinate, as of a sheriff.
A diligent, dependable worker.
A farmer who cultivates his own land, especially a member of a former class of
small freeholding farmers in England."

"Battlerider / Battle Horseman" - He's not only a knight. He belongs to a

Cavaliers would be a good description, yes. I don't think there's a phrase in
English like "horseman"... but that's the problem with translations. Ugh!

"Guards Horsewoman" - I can't believe that that shall sounds crazy for you.
And, Shiri, YES, she IS a woman (I have 10 of them). She's one of the

Oh, I know she's a woman! I was just saying that it is SO obvious that you
don't (IMO) have to say it.

Well anyhow, glad I could be of any use! Seeing I'm a fellow ESLer, I can
often see what you're trying to say, because I used to make the same
translation glitches (like translating proverbs and idioms literally). Now
that I live in the US I have no choice but to learn English well. :-)

'ey!  I orta know too, on account of it being my idea...:P  I want to get a

Maybe a few others - but I'd rather use my various wizardly pieces to recreate
the 'figs of other folks who want to have their characters show up!

Well I could just give you mine... in fact if we end up hosting it in Boston
(will you want to host it?) we could work on it together, so I could gladly
join in and contribute to recreation of any minifigs that might be arriving
thru RDPs at any given moment... :-)

I'd be very happy, even, to host the convention, although my inn will be way
to small to host the whole CW wisemen... We'll need minimum Eric K's inn for
that, I guess! <grin>

Well, Eric, you, me, and Dave are all darn close together.  Eric, you
listening?  Think the Gathering could rent your inn?  Or is your village one
of the lucky few that's been forewarned? >8)

I hope Eric will join in. But just to make it clear (for other people): this
is totally NOT location-restricted! Rene (for example) could contribute all
the way from Germany just as well as I could from right here! And likewise for
anyone else, wherever you might be geographically.

This sounds like something I'd enjoy doing. If anyone's interested, drop me
a
note, yah?

'ey!  I orta know too, on account of it being my idea...:P  I want to get a
little bit farther in my Sain/Batu storyline before I start on this
project...but if people want to bandy a few ideas about, that's OK...

I caught myself in time, and replyed to my own post... didn't mean to steal
your thoughts :-)

This sounds like great fun! C'mon, anyone else?

I have about 8 wizards/wizardesses I could contribute.

Ooooooh!! Count me in, definitely! Depending if this is going on in the
present or past, I might be able to contribute anywhere from 3 to 6 "wise"
people ;-)

Well, it's happened in the past, but I'd probably be hosting one happening
"now".  No reason there couldn't be flashbacks to past Gatherings, though.

Alright! In that case, I have three wizards to contribute.

Just to make sure, tho': the zone is totally neutral, yah? (Otherwise they
couldn't all be there <hint, hint>)

Completely neutral.  Really.  That's the chief rule of the Gathering, and if
anyone breaks it, *all* of the other mages there are expected to, ah, how to
put it..."lay the great big magickal smackdown on them".

So far only one person's been foolish enough to try...Ganchin the Impetuous,
about 450 years ago.  After it was all over, the mages gave a heartfelt public
apology to the remaining population of the continent (things got a little out
of hand), but the area remains deserted to this day, except for foolish people
who want to find out if you really *can* still hear Ganchin's screams floating
on the wind.

The Red Fox will definitely be in attendance, as will the the Grey Wolf...and
of course Dr. Cornelius and his rival, the Learned Sage Liang Chu.  I hope
that other folks coming will be able to get along better than these guys!

Ouch. Not mine! But I'm sure that my folks, individually, would get along with

That was indeed my thought, because 2 brains are better than 1, and 3 or 4
(Eric, Dave) are better than 2...

Absolutely! We'll do everything possible to recreate your 'fig here so you
don't have to risk the vagaries of the Postal Service, but just as the
Gathering consists of wise folk from around the world, this project should
involve people from around our world...

"Yeoman Archer" - If "yeoman" means to be not dependent on strict rules.

A farmer who cultivates his own land,
especially a member of a former class of
small freeholding farmers in England."

[snip]

(1) This is my favorite! What's a yeoman? It's a yeoman! (like, duh :)

According to my understanding of medieval history in England,
a yeoman was a peasant farmer who wasn't a serf.
What's a serf?  Well, a serf was a peasant farmer
who was tied to the land, but was otherwise free,
as opposed to a slave.

Thus, at the bottom of the heap was "slave",
then came "serf" with a little bit more freedom,
then came "yeoman".

(It was much later on that "yeoman" acquired
the additional meaning of "helper of ship's captain", etc.)

A slave was property, end of story.

A serf was -- technically -- *not* property,
and thus could not be sold as a slave to another nobleman,
but the serf could not leave the land to which he was assigned
without the permission of the landowner (the noblman).

A yeoman however *could* move on to better pickings
if he so desired.  Also, he could own his own land
(instead of farming the nobleman's land
and paying "rents" and "taxes" out of the food he produced).

Another point to consider is that *only* a gentleman or a noblman
could own, carry, or use traditional military weapons
(the armor and swords of the knighthood).
As "peasants", serfs and yeoman were restricted
to such farm-like implements as flails, staves, slings,
and so on, including *bows* (but don't let the wardens
catch you poaching the nobleman's deer, or you'll hang!).

Later on, the English passed laws *requiring* the yeoman
to learn how to use the longbow.  (Ask the French
about Agincourt...)

Hope this helps!  :-)

Thanks,
Franklin

Well, a druid was *originally* (before D&D got ahold of it) a Celtic
priest/wise man.  The whole "treehugging nature guy" stuff was invented by
Gygax.  (Read some of the Irish tales to get a better idea of what druids
really did - I highly recommend the ones about Finn mac Cool and his
Fianna.) So I think "geomancer" would be slightly more correct.

On the other hand, "-mancy" comes from the Greek "mantis" or prophet*, and
technically all of the forms of whatevermancy are forms of divination -
pyromancy would be predicting the future by gazing into flames, for
example.  So "geomancer", "pyromancer", and all those other terms aren't
really technically correct either.

(I'm not really sure why the former inaccuracy bothers me more than the
latter.)

J

* - which, interestingly enough, is also related to "mania" or madness.
Tells you something about what the Greeks thought of prophets...

Perhaps "Freeman" or "Mercenary" (if he hires himself out to fight for others)
would be better?

"Battlerider / Battle Horseman" - He's not only a knight. He belongs to a
company of Heavy Cavallary. But maybe you called them "Cavaliers"

Cavaliers would be a good description, yes. I don't think there's a phrase in
English like "horseman"... but that's the problem with translations. Ugh!

From www.dictionary.com:

1.  A gallant or chivalrous man, especially one serving as escort to a woman of
high social position; a gentleman.
2.  A mounted soldier; a knight.
3.Cavalier. A supporter of Charles I of England in his struggles against
Parliament. Also called Royalist.

I wouldn't use "cavalier", as it is definitely *not* the first definition (most
common).  I'd use "Cavalryman" (actually, "Horseman" would work, too.  I'm
sure I've seen it used before), since he is a part of a Heavy Cavalry unit.
www.dictionary.com definition of "cavalry":

1.A highly mobile army unit using vehicular transport, such as light armor and
helicopters.
2.Troops trained to fight on horseback.

Both refer, IMO, to what René seems to be getting at.

Well, "implore" means beg, so maybe René meant "command"?  Like I said in a

I have a number of mages who are affixing their "Hello, my name is:" badges to
their robes and deciding whether they should attend the "Care and Feeding of
Familiars for Maximum Mana Potential" symposium or to hit the convention floor
and see if they can find an enchanted Backscratcher for a decent price.

Most likely, they'll all just get drunk in the tavern.  One of them will pass
out and the other guys will write things like "I am a Hedge Wizard" and
"Picklemancer" on his face with (what else?) a Magic Marker.  Then, for a final
trick, they will make all the gold in his pouch disappear and buy another round
for themselves.  Won't he be mad when he wakes up!

Watch out for those Hydromancers, though.  They have a strange control over
liquids and never seem to get drunk.  Also, I've never seen one have to use the
bathroom.

Anyway, I will be developing some of my mages and taking photos and adding them
to the website the next time I get a chance.  I've come up with a lot of new
characters, but haven't had time to write about them or even build them.

Green: Forest
Yellow: Multicolored Gold

Heh. I may be the only computer gaming geek that hasn't. :)

Well, the High Templars in Starcraft are described as psionic aliens capable of
emitting storms of psionic energy and hallucinations, and two of them can join
to make a stronger creature (an Archon).

I modelled my human templars more after a combination of Star Wars Jedi, and
the templar character class in the MUD I play (www.thresholdrpg.com). The MUD
templars are mages which have sacrificed some types of spells in order to be
able to wield weapons. Like Jedi, my templars can manipulate the world around
them, but using magical rather than psionic principles (but NO midichlorians,
yuck).

Another important characteristic is that each (non-starcraft) templar has a
cause, a set of goals that they actively strive for. There are some pretty
horrific evils lurching, shambling, and creeping through my realms, and the
templars are one of the most potent forces keeping them in check.
