Well this is a first of sorts for me on several levels:
Its my first time to use FTX for a post so if this fubars, my apologies ahead
of time.
Its the first (and hopefully) the last time Ill use such a long title but I
couldnt resist. Gold star to anyone that recognizes the reference.;)
Its also the first time Ive used a Technic motor, gear reduction, or fiber
optics in a MOC, and I found a great use for the new 2x2x2 Click-blocks from the
Alpha Team under water sets (they make great speakers).
So, may I formally introduce you to:
Crazy Leo and the Knights!
Their first garage band appearance was in Columbus, OH at the August COLTC
Tuttle Mall display:
Still, despite appearing atop the local supermarket, their performance landed
them the attention of producer Tommy Brickly. He immediately signed them to a
recording contract and set about updating their stage and light show.
The band members (l-r):
Jef Studsdown - bass, backing vocals
Johnny Brickson - lead vocals, guitars, banjo(1)
Crazy Leo - drums (whatever you do, dont ask him to sing)
Gary Half Stud Offset - guitars, backing vocals
Teknique - guitars, backing vocals (2)
They performed this past weekend with their new stage at the Dayton GATS as part
of the COLTC display (I cant believe I didnt get any pictures of them in the
display.. oops.) and seemed to meet with favorable response from those
attending.
The folder was just moderated (thank you!) if you wish to see more images:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=59845
I apologize for the lower quality of the lighted images; my digital camera is
old and tired and doesnt like it when I play with exposure settings but I think
the idea of how the fiber optics function is conveyed.
Im extremely pleased with how everything turned out with this MOC.
The fiber optic generators are spun by a single motor running off a worm gear
for speed reduction so that both generators fire at a more reasonable speed of
once every 1.5 to 2 seconds or so. Early gearing had them firing off way too
fast (1-2x a second) for my liking.
The last lesson was learned in the field: One motor + 2 FO generators + 3
flashing lights=too much drain for 1 9v battery. The setup devoured 3 9vs (to
my knowledge) over the first day and a half till Mike Gallagher was cool enough
to loan me a 3ft power cable to run it directly from a train regulator. That
solved the problem once for all. Thanks Mike!
Comments and questions are welcome, hope you enjoy it!

(2) Arguably the most popular member of the band and certainly the most easy on

Nate,
Thanks for the kind words. My wife was trying to help me find some 1x2 with
technic hole bricks for a speaker tower initially. Id planned to just stick the
stud of a 2x2 radar dish in it but they were really too big and then I saw the
stack of those bricks and they were perfect. :)
Youre right on the song reference. ;) Somehow it seemed appropriate.
Thanks for the reply.

I love it. Great job with the band and instruments. I particularly like the
drum set and the expression of the drummer is awesome. The guitar cables are a
nice touch too, and the monitor amps... and the giant stage poster behind the
drummer.
Wish I got a chance to see the light show in action.
Hey, so what piece is that you use for the speakers? Doesn't look familiar to
me. Is it from a new set?

Thanks for the compliments, Brendan!
I can't take credit for the 1x2x1 plates as the electric guitar bodies as I am
pretty sure I saw someone else use them with a different piece for the neck in
the past, but I don't recall anyone using wrenches as the neck.
Grin. The face of that Alpha Team fig was just too perfect to not use in the
band and it just screamed "I'm a drummer!" :)
The King Leo's castle banner happened to be the perfect size to provide backing
to prevent the distraction of seeing 'through' the structure. Hence, Crazy Leo
and the Knights. I know..pretty bad. ;)
> Wish I got a chance to see the light show in action.
One of the guys in COLTC has a digital video cam and took a few seconds of video
of the band so if it comes out I may be able to talk him into converting it to
.mpg or.avi for me. I'll post if so.

It's the brick that the new mecha-style arms on the 4793 Ogel Shark sub connect
into. It comes with 2 of them as I recall. I think they're in a few other sets
as well but off hand I forget which ones..
Thanks again for the positive feedback.

Thanks, Dave!
I've given some thought to adding actual music but in that it's (thus far) been
displayed as part of the local train club display... I'm not convinced that most
would be happy to endure my choice of music despite how cool it would be. :) I'd
be interested in other OS (win 9X) apps but need an RCX first. ;)

Joel,
When I read about the OS/rcx, I got thinking (yes I do sometimes...). We could
plaly I-tunes from the movie Theater (Macintosh Laptop). This will not interfer
with display of the presentation and/or the wireless camera. In the last layout,
the band was close to the Drive-In theater anyway. We could put them next to
eachother, as in real life, drive-in movie theaters are located just outside
cities, as are concert halls!
I'm redesigning the parking lot of the drive in so we can reach certain keys on
the keyboard when pushing on a fig or car. I could make one for volume up, and
one for volume down. I also have an unused RCX, you're welcome to experiment
with it.

Does the knife create any indention in the head where the mike was, or are you
able to scrape the printing off by itself without damaging the head?

Well.. it depends on how cross eyed I get and how shakey my hand is at any given
time. :) Ive got a few heads that werent badly marked and a few that are. In
my personal experiences with the Alpha Team heads where the blade removes the
paint it does tend to remove the surface finish/shine from the ABS.. but
again, if I do it right, thats minimal. Ive done a couple Jet heads that way
from Rock Raiders as well, removing the mic so Id have more female faces and
one is horrible, the other couple werent bad.

I'm still thinking about speakers really or rather where to put them. Maybe
under the stage somehow so the sound seems to be coming 'from' the band etc...
with no unsightly 'non-LEGO' speakers to be seen (cables I can live with) them
maybe it would work. I'll see what I can come up with and maybe try to
experiment some. A working light show definately has appeal. :)
Thanks for the ideas and offer. I'm sure something will work.

I agree, which is why the banjo was done away with.. ;) Brickenrocker has some
rather nice ideas and may be the site I recall seeing before. Probably where I

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the compliments, Shirley!
Dont be so quick to downplay your abilities. No one is pathetic. Ive come to
realize building with LEGO is more like going to school -- I generally feel like
Im a sophomore or MAYBE a junior, where many around here are Senors... and some
skipped ahead a few years. Other times I feel like maybe I got held back a year
or two. ;)
Thats the beauty of LEGO -- getting to look at others works is what lets us
learn faster. Without LUGNET or Brickshelf I have no idea what Id be building
these days. Keep at it! :)
Now to keep this more on topic for remaining in .town:
You pegged it. The bass drum is indeed a 2x2 round brick with a 2x2 printed tile
from a Life on Mars set. The drum is mounted on two 1x1 headlight bricks.
I thought some of the pictures showed it better than they actually do. If youd
like I can take an image or two of the drum kit out of the stage, its no
trouble to do.

This came out when I was about 11 and I wanted it so bad.
Two problems:
1. It wasn't available in India at that time
2. None of my relatives were kind enough to shell out $120 for it
Fast forward 14 years, I'm now in the US, am employed and have some
money to spare. And I would really like this set, if for nothing else,
but to satisfy a childhood dream.
The problem NOW is that it has been discontinued. The friendly store
manager at Legoland, California suggested that this would be a good
forum to post queries on.
If any of you have this set and are willing to sell it to me (in good
condition, of course) or know of where I can get it, PLEASE do let me know.
