Lastly, I do think that some consensus has to be reached upon what defines a “.space-official” theme or subtheme and how the community as a whole allows a new theme to be defined. For example, are space hippies and the rastastarians separate themes in and of themselves or are they part of a larger “woodstock in space/60’s-70’s” theme? I can see the proliferation of too many themes being somewhat problematic in someways. First, it could quickly become a nightmare to manage the subtheme page, and also, too many themes could dilute the enthusiasm of building MOCs to a particular theme. I can also see someone eventually getting bent out of shape becuase they created a theme but no one else is building creations for it!?!

I guess I’m thinking something like to propose a new subtheme, two or more people would have to build and post a few creations for the proto-theme along with the color/building style guidlines and short backstory. Then the group could vote (via lugnet poll) whether or not to accept the new theme... I don’t know, that may be too formal but I would rather see 5-10 very active themes vs. 20+ themes that are rather dormant. Maybe at somepoint when enthusiasm for a given them wears off it can be offically “closed” to make room for a new theme???

just my thoughts,

Being in the process of developing my own subtheme, I have a few thoughts on the issue.

First and foremost, I had a bad reaction to reading the suggestion that there would be a vote on which subthemes were considered “official”. Maybe the Eastern Block can back me up on this, but it almost seems a bit classist. I’m just not a big fan of thinking that someone could put hard work into an original project and have it dismissed because there weren’t two builders or because it came a little too close to an established theme or something. Not saying that there would be any hostility or elitist behavior here, but I disagree with anything LEGO-oriented that suggests rules on anyone’s creativity. Not trying to be harsh, maybe I’m just paranoid.

However, there are definitely good concepts and plenty of room for growth in this project. Perhaps if it was made clear that these were the major subthemes in .space, almost like a hall of fame type deal. Listing them and providing links and detailed info is awesome, especially for someone like me who hasn’t been around as long as some others. I like the idea of recognizing those who have put forth the extra work to make an entire world (or galaxy, in this case) around their MOCs. I trust the community will make the best of this.

My particular subtheme, since I’m mentioning it, grew out of a conversation after a WAMALUG meeting with Joe Meno. I don’t know how much info about his spaceship he wants to give out, but he was mentioning having stickers for the different news outlets his photos and stories go too. Which got me thinking about how cool it would be to expand the .space paparazzi theme into a full bore CNN-style news channel, complete with studios, on-location reports, “Crossfire” type comic debates, etc. The Earth Broadcasting Corporation (or EBC) currently has a few things in the works already, and after I finish moving, I might actually finish them to put up here. Anyways, that’s my plan, and I gladly put it up as a test for creating and “accepting” new themes to see how it might work.

(...) snip (...) Hey like I said, it was just an idea. I did not mean for it to come off as eliteist or classist. I was under the impression/ASSUMPTION that these "community accepted" subthemes would become community building projects where anyone (...) (21 years ago, 3-Apr-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

snip (...) I'll second that idea. Futhermore it would be really cool to have this subtheme page part of the .space frontpage (or linked to it). It would also be cool to implement a process where people can submit links for theme-MOCs and have the (...) (21 years ago, 2-Apr-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)
