I would be surprised, too. If I were doing RIS 1.5, I'd fix a few holes
in the firmware (arrays and pointers, a subroutine return addr stack
instead of one subroutine call per task, &c) and add some power to RCX
Code without compromising its clarity (variables, arithmetic, fewer
restrictions on stack controllers, copy/paste of blocks and stacks, &c).
If I were doing anything more, I'd call it 2.0.
Fwiw, I don't think they fear the adult Mindstorms users. I suspect they
view third party tools like NQC as room to grow for their target
audience - but something that will happen without their encouragement,
so why should they get in the way?
Finally, that 80,000 number is seriously out of date. Lego now claims
something on the order of 150,000 units sold; my early July purchase
from a Toys R Us is #143,831.
