I find it handy to use as a "manual override" switch. I have one setup
where for whatever reason the touch sensor isn't 100% responsive and
when it fails to register the structure begins to tear itself apart.
Being able to press the button on the remote is far easier and faster
than running across the room, around obstacles to grab it quickly yet
gently to stop it.
Another cool note is you can have a program running and still activate
motors with the remote while the program runs.

I have been soundly disputed. I had not realized that the remote
could be
used as a remote for the _entire_ front panel on the RCX. I thought it
would
just have the three motors and three GP buttons. I stand so corrected.
