Maybe I should have stated myself a little differently earlier. I do realize that
seeing what others do pushes us all to strive to do better, and I believe that's a
very healthy part of completion. I have no issue with that at all. I believe that
is what has made people successful in all aspects of life. Those who continually
work to do better, to push themselves, are the ones who made this world the great
place it is today.

I think the thing I'm concerned about is that it becomes an unhealthy atmosphere
were others are afraid to try and start clubs or share their own creations for fear
that they will be shunned or outcast. I think that the LEGO train community needs
to keep encouraging others to do their best and keep pushing harder. Much like the
other model rail clubs do.

Currently I don't see anyone being treated poorly in the LEGO train community, I
just hope that we keep sight of the reason we do trains in the first place, and not
let it become a hostile situation were some people don't feel welcomed.

That's all I meant, I do know that every time I see images of what others have done
that I need to work extra hard to do better also. That's what makes it so much fun,
doing things that I didn't think I could do.

I agree with Larry that we need to becareful not to let the LTCs become a
competition among each other. I do believe that by looking at what each club • has
done keeps others motivated to do more. I'd really hate to see it come down • to a
one club versus another. Some days I become overwhelmed trying to keep up with
the other clubs, but after I do a show I get all fired up and I'm ready to • build
some more.

I have to disagree a bit here.  As a highly competitive person, I work better
when I feel that I must compete *against* somebody.  Competition really does
drive innovation and pushes the envelope further.  As long as it does not
become a destructive competition or foster harsh feelings, competition would
be good.

Personally, I would not be working so hard on my layout if I was not trying
not to be put to shame by Conan's.  I want one better than his.  That is the
competitive spirit that is going to drive me to put in overtime on my layout.
I would love to have another 3-4 people making layouts this big.  Each person
could specialize in an area, trying to make their section better than the
other people's.  One could do a harbor, one could have a city, one could make
a mountain scene, etc.  I would love to be able to devote my entire layout to
2 sections of what a show would need and let others specialize in other
areas.  Competing against eachother helps us to raise the bar, which helps us
compete against the real rival - model trains.

After all is said and done, I want everyone to make better layouts.  Just like
the new Supercar is more complex than to former, we should have a natural
progression of making better and better layouts, and we all can benefit from
the fruits of competition.
