I have to disagree a bit here.  As a highly competitive person, I work better
when I feel that I must compete *against* somebody.  Competition really does
drive innovation and pushes the envelope further.  As long as it does not
become a destructive competition or foster harsh feelings, competition would
be good.

Personally, I would not be working so hard on my layout if I was not trying
not to be put to shame by Conan's.  I want one better than his.  That is the
competitive spirit that is going to drive me to put in overtime on my layout.
I would love to have another 3-4 people making layouts this big.  Each person
could specialize in an area, trying to make their section better than the
other people's.  One could do a harbor, one could have a city, one could make
a mountain scene, etc.  I would love to be able to devote my entire layout to
2 sections of what a show would need and let others specialize in other
areas.  Competing against eachother helps us to raise the bar, which helps us
compete against the real rival - model trains.

After all is said and done, I want everyone to make better layouts.  Just like
the new Supercar is more complex than to former, we should have a natural
progression of making better and better layouts, and we all can benefit from
the fruits of competition.

Mike

Maybe I should have stated myself a little differently earlier. I do realize that seeing what others do pushes us all to strive to do better, and I believe that's a very healthy part of completion. I have no issue with that at all. I believe that is (...) (24 years ago, 4-Mar-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.org.us, lugnet.org.us.wamalug)

(...) Wow Mike, you really have set the "bar" higher as to your LEGO aspirations. Going against Conan. Wow, that would take some doing. The way I would suggest competing, is with "quality over quantity" (my own philosophy). But it doesn't hurt to (...) (24 years ago, 6-Mar-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.org.us, lugnet.org.us.wamalug)
