Feeling sheepish?
(Lamenting your reply even as I type that...)
(or is that lamb-menting your reply instead? Hmm...)

The 9701 and its fellow Dinobloks sets preceded the bulk of LEGOs
departure from (mostly) primary colors (at least in terms of my
collection), so once I got my hands on the broader palette, I was hooked.

Yes, but they also pre-dated TLGs cursed foray into juniorization as well.
I mean, look at those feet! If that isnt Galidor foreshadowing, I dont
know what is!

Micronauts, Id say!
But as far as the juniorization argument goes, Id suggest that the pre-formed
elements (head and feet) are meant sort of as accessories, since they cant
really be reproduced using regular bricks. Juniorization IMO suggests the
pointless combination of several regular elements into a single piece that may
be cheaper to produce but which doesnt enhance ones enjoyment of the building
experience.
Im not sure what the term should apply to large-ish elements that cant be
broken down into smaller basic bricks, but I dont think juniorization is quite
right.

You are truly a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, Dave!

Oh, Im a rich tapestry, all-rightie!
