The 9701 and its fellow Dinobloks sets preceded the bulk of LEGO’s departure from (mostly) primary colors (at least in terms of my collection), so once I got my hands on the broader palette, I was hooked.

Yes, but they also pre-dated TLG’s cursed foray into juniorization as well. I mean, look at those feet! If that isn’t Galidor foreshadowing, I don’t know what is!

Micronauts, I’d say!

But as far as the juniorization argument goes, I’d suggest that the pre-formed elements (head and feet) are meant sort of as accessories, since they can’t really be reproduced using regular bricks. Juniorization IMO suggests the pointless combination of several regular elements into a single piece that may be cheaper to produce but which doesn’t enhance one’s enjoyment of the building experience.

I’m not sure what the term should apply to large-ish elements that can’t be broken down into smaller basic bricks, but I don’t think juniorization is quite right.

You are truly a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, Dave!

Oh, I’m a rich tapestry, all-rightie!

Dave!
