First it was these two sets for me:

    442 Space Shuttle
35 elements, 1 figure, 1979
LEGO > SYSTEM > Space > {Classic}

    6861 X-1 Patrol Craft
53 elements, 1 figure, US$4, 1980
LEGO > SYSTEM > Space > {Classic}

   ...caused you to integrate new techniques that have improved your building? and/or

Then these:

    6989 Mega Core Magnetizer
486 elements, 3 figures, US$60, 1990
LEGO > SYSTEM > Space > M:Tron

    6941 Battrax
276 elements, 1 figure, 1987
LEGO > SYSTEM > Space > Blacktron I

   ...inspired you to raise the sophistication and complexity of your building?

Later these helped me:

    8425 Black Falcon / Sky Stormer
470 elements, 0 figures, US$49.50, 1996
LEGO > TECHNIC > Tech Build / Advanced

    8880 Super Car
1343 elements, 0 figures, US$130?, 1994
LEGO > TECHNIC

    8485 Control Center / Control II
1063 elements, 0 figures, US$219, 1995
LEGO > TECHNIC > Tech Build / Advanced

-snip-

What LEGO set took your building to the next level?

All of those inspired me or helped me to learn new ways to build things.
The Space sets helped my imagination along with the cool parts.
The Technic sets helped me to understand mechanical theory.

....and no list is completed with out the R.I.S!!!

    3804 Robotics Invention System 2.0
718 elements, 0 figures, US$200, 2001
LEGO > MINDSTORMS > {Invention Kit}

Thank you LEGO!, and thank you Karl for the fun questions.
