  • I actually do own my mean set, but not my median set!
  • I only got my 6 modal sets just over a week ago. Before that, my modal set was 7124, of which I own 3.
  • I’m afraid I had to think for a second about what ‘median’ actually meant. What can I say? Stats was never my strong suit.

I’m confoosled. How can you not own your median set?

Easy! Have an even number of sets, and not have a multiple that set spans the midpoint. (If there is no midpoint you take the average of the two around the midpoint).

Unless it means something other than what thought it meant...

If you had a collection which consisted of ten copies each of:

    6258 Smuggler's Shanty
69 elements, 3 figures, US$9.25, 1992
LEGO > SYSTEM > Pirate > Pirates
and

    6260 Shipwreck Island
69 elements, 2 figures, US$12, 1990
LEGO > SYSTEM > Pirate > Pirates

(Which, incidentally, would be a nice, if somewhat small collection.)

Your median would be:

    6259 Broadside's Brig
64 elements, 3 figures, US$8.75, 1991
LEGO > SYSTEM > Pirate > Imperial Guards

Thus, the median can be as misleading as the average (which, in this case, is the same set).

Cool, huh?

(And I came up with a pirate set!!)

(...) Bah! Anyone can do that!!! BTW after re-evaluating, I must amend my stats - my modal set is now [LEGOSet 9936] A significant portion of which are utilised (URL) here>. This may also mean my average & median are wrong, but I can't be bothered (...) (20 years ago, 22-Dec-04, to lugnet.loc.au, FTX)
