My devotion for LEGO both ended and resurrected with the 5580 Highway
Rig.

At the age of 13-14 or so, I got this set. I bought it with my own
saved money, despite my mother's comment that I was too old for LEGO.
When I had built the 5580, I simply put it on the shelf, and it remained
there. This was pretty uncommon for me. I normally played around with
my newly built LEGO sets for some time. Then, I made small
modifications to them, which gradually turned them into something
different. For example, the 855 Mobile Crane.

This got changed many times as it stood on the shelf. First, I added a
new set of steering wheels and made a driver's compartement. Then, I
added a second set of steering wheels, and enlarged the driver's
compartement.
The 8846 Tow Truck is also one of my all time favorites:

I had two copies of this one, and knew the design so well, I could build
it from scratch without looking at the directions. This one got changed
a lot. I removed the crane and made a new set of seats. Then I added
wide rear tyres and rear suspension.
But the 5580 Highway Rig remained on the shelf, and I stopped building
with LEGO bricks. This was the time I started programming in Commodore
64 assembler, BTW, which took most of my spare time.
But a couple of years ago I thought: "Wouldn't it be nice to bring the
5580 from my parent's house over to where I live now?" So I did. At
first, it rested on my shelf for a couple of weeks. Then I disassembled
it and cleaned all the parts. "Let's see what I can build from this", I
thought. I soon run into the problem that the number of parts was
limited, of course, so I thought: "Why not get another set and see if I
can build some more?"
Well, I got _far_ more than one more set, and as they say, the rest is
history.

| I wonder if most people entered their dark ages gradually, without really noticing that Lego was becoming less and less important to them or whether people remember making an abrupt decision to stop using Lego. For me, the former was true. I do (...) (26 years ago, 11-Mar-99, to lugnet.general)
