Technic seems to be "in". It will be expanded (no word on how).
Funny, I haven't seen much of it around in stores.  I haven't gotten any • for
at
least four years.

You probably didn't recognise it as being Technics. All those Roboriders and
Slizers are supposedly Technics sets. I guess it is "Technics Junior".

UCS Star Wars-14+,  Mindstroms 12.

I think 14+ for UCS Star Wars is a "marketing device" to suggest they have a
range of sets for adults. I've built the UCS X-Wing and, while it's a nice
set, it's not hard to build. A lot of Technics sets rated for younger kids
are the same level of difficulty. If you can master Mindstorms at 12, I
would not think you'd have any problem with UCS!

In constrast, I'm less certain of whether all 12 year olds would be OK with
Mindstorms. Programming (albeit simple programming) does not come naturally
to everyone, and building mechanical structures that work in conjunction
with it is not so easy either. Certainly I would not give a 12 year old
Mindstorms unless they had previously displayed some interest and ability in
programming or engineering.
