The swivel cannon is always able to target. Without a swivel cannon, your
ability to target depends somewhat on the GM's estimation of the angle of
broadside, but it tends to be a pretty small arc on either side of the ship
(though it is increased the more cannon you have since if ONE broadside
cannon has targetting, they all do).

Except that I think a class 6 against 6 class 1s can blow 2 or three
of them out of the water before they do much damage at all to it.
Maybe we should run that as an experiment!

At BricksWest 2002, we ran a class 3 or 4 against several class 1s. Now the
big ship was played by a young player, but he had a very good grasp of the
game. The class 1s won pretty easily. Two big things contributed:

1. Maneuverability. I think they were always able to get at least one
"crossing the T" shot.

2. The more men on the target ship, the more effective grape is.

Yes. In fact, circling back, I've seen that players do better buying
lots of men and keeping their class 1, and then TAKING class 1s from
other folks instead of buying a class 2. But part of that is because
I still think grape is too powerful, at least a bit.

Interestingly, people were originally complaining that grape wasn't
effective enough.

Actually, it's small arms fire that is too effective.

I'm actually pretty seriously considering ditching ESPG and looking for a
different set of rules. I'm not convinced it's worth the effort to fix a
broken set of rules. There probably is a much better set of rules out there.
