While "separate worlds" reduces the friction, it also reduces the
interraction. There is a lot of benefit to having strong interrations between
peoples creations. The important thing is to allow each participant to work
with the other participants to determine how the interractions will work.
I think the way to handle the layout of the various realms is to allow people
as they have a need to actually define the location of their real in relation
to others, to then define that location at that time. They should work with
everyone who is already on the map to determine where their realm will be
located. There will be situations where you really want to be adjacent to two
realms which are already placed, but not such that it is possible for you to be
adjacent (either because they are far spread, or that adjacency would affect
other folks besides the ones you want to be adjacent to, or even that one or
both of the folks you want to be adjacent to don't want to be adjacent to you).
If that occurs, you probably just have to change your plans. It may be possible
to place your realm such that someone else's realm is between yours and one you
want to be adjacent to, and that realm will let your characters pass through
without incident, or perhaps you can use a gate.
As a gamer who has explored the implications of separate worlds connected by
gates (Everway is structured this way), I can say that it is very hard to get
your arms around the universe, and this difficulty dramatically affects the
possible inspirations.
