So, what did he say about MLCad / LDraw?  Did he make any comments
comparing TLC's software to LCAD?  Does he do stuff in MLCad because he
enjoys it, or just as a matter of keeping aware of what's going on?

Because of the nature of his job, I think that he does it cause he enjoys it.
He didn't comment much on the software, I dunno if that's because TLC is
skittish about releasing opinions or not (I recall a couple years ago either I
talked to or someone from TLC posted here - I/we asked if he liked the
program, and said he couldn't comment).  But this guy seems to be pretty aware
of the community, or at least he's poked aroudn enough to find LDraw/MLCad.

Drat! One thing I like about LDraw (usually): it combines the modeling with
the instructions.

Yeah.  What I would have given to see their instruction making
software....*drool* :)

A couple problems with this:

1. Do you have any reason to think that they will ever *tell* us what their
names are?  Not just one or two at a time, but releasing the entire list.

I don't know if they will officially or not.  And I don't know if employees
are allowed to give it out either.  I've seen some of it on bins in the model
shop, and its certainly not close to our system either.

2. As I understand it (not having seen most of their part names), TLC
doesn't have *a* standard for naming parts.

I get the same impression.

With LDraw, we're making an
effort to use names that are consistent, easy to reference (once you're
used to our methods), and standardized.  I'd hate to lose that, just to
adhere to an inferior (usability-wise) 'official' source.

Yeah, me too.  I'm definitely partial to our system because that's what I'm
familiar with when I make models.  And yes, it is consistent and that is a
Good Thing.  But realize that TLC is an old company and those names have been
around for years.  They're familiar with them and they're TLC, so they don't
see the need to change.  If we could get them to parallel their names with
ours in their lists, that would be cool, if they would start to see that there
are standards in our system and adopt it, more power to us :)

Hmm.  Multi-name support.  Hmm.

It would be a Good Thing to offer that.  If we ever get a copy of TLC's system
to release a parts update in their naming convention.  I'll bet more TLC
employees would get it based on that alone.

Actually, it would be kind of cool to add a "rename this part" function to
the VEC (in LDAO).  But that would require having a custom Parts Update
Installer, to retain the custom names when new P.U.'s are applied.

Yeah.. again that goes back to the installation utility which was discussed
here some time ago.  Will we see that?  Who knows.  But its another good idea.

They did seem to hint that Lego will be coming out with a CAD program using
those names, I'm assuming because they have agreements with AutoDesk that it
will be based on their software.  Hopefully it isn't too dumbed down, but then
again, we may have the upper hand there because we're not effected by a
corporate vision - just by what we want.  And for CAD software that we (AFOLs)
use, its what we want that matters, not who makes it.

(...) Actually they are aware of a lot of things, I know someone from TLC who tried LeoCAD. It's not a big surprise, if they know Lugnet then it's almost impossible not to know the CAD newsgroups too. (...) We could come up with a simple standard (...) (24 years ago, 25-Aug-00, to lugnet.cad)
