How would  someone be able to get to Fabuland from this page ?  Or know
about  it?   I know the idea is to be more welcoming and this involves
streamlining to some extent , but I am currious as to where particlarly
Fabuland gets linked to on this evolving page.

Possibly, an ideal index of main themed groups might include logos like the
ones used on these pages:

  http://www.lugnet.com/castle/
  http://www.lugnet.com/duplo/

What do you think?

How about something more hierarchical.  Maybe somewhere near the top of the
homepage instead of the botton you have a like that says "Find a Newsgroup".
Then the first page you come to after clicking on that lists some general areas
of interest.

Like...

General
Local Groups
Organisations
Themed Groups
Admin
Off-Topic
Fun

Etc.

Then if you chose the Themed groups you would get a list of those or if you
chose local groups you got a list of those.

As far as the rest of the page goes I think it is better although I agree with
Frank Filz on most of his points.

My list of suggestions include...

1.  Puting the Organisations or at least a link that gets you to all the
organisations in a prominant position on the homepage.

2.  I agree with Frank in that I think having the new members on the left adds
emphasis to that and takes it away from the newsgroups.  I know you don't want
to take emphasis away from membership because that is your "bread and butter"
so to speak but I think a more balanced look might be better.

3.  In the list of local groups I would put a "more..." at the bottom of the
list so people realise there are other local groups.  The way it is now I might
think those were the only local groups and not even attempt looking for others.

4.  Same for Themed I would put a "more..." at the bottom of the list so see
what other themes are available.

Basically I think your biggest omission is the .org groups.  I think they need
some mention on the homepage.  You might have your reasons for not including
them but I personally think we need them there.

On another note for experianced users:  How about a "Your LUGNET" page where
you can configure the homepage to your desires.  I know I could set up
something similar with a personal LUGNET page but I think being able to pick
and choose what you see for links and articles on the homepage would be kind of
cool.  We can already configure the articles I suppose but how about
configuring links to "Your most read sites"  For example I could pick the
following...

lugnet.org.us.nelug
lugnet.org
lugnet.loc.us.ma.bos
lugnet.general
lugnet.castle
lugnet.trains
lugnet.starwars

And then those would appear in one of the sidebars when I opened the homepage.

I realise thats more work but I think it would be neat.
