It would be fairly straightforward to put next & prev links (or buttons)
near the top which incremented or decremented the article number for a
group, taking you to the previous or next message.  (I think the old
pre-May-1999 web interface even had this.)

On the other hand, there's a lot of ambiguity in what "forward" or
"backwards" means in a single-article context.  If it was said always to
mean "proceed to the next or previous article in the group that you're
viewing, assuming that you didn't hop there from the middle of a thread
or some other random starting point," you're saying that would that be
helpful?

yes.

OK, this only took some small tweaks to make it do this (about 10-15 minutes).
It's nothing fancy (numeric links rather than pretty words or buttons) and
it's not especially bright (detects walking off the low end but not the high
end) but maybe it gets the job done well enough for now.

The reason it doesn't detect walking off the high end is that it needs to
know the article count, and at that stage in displaying the page (the header)
it doesn't hardly even know yet what it's going to be displaying, much less
the article count for a group.  :)  So I kluged a little something special
to check for ?n= right before displaying the header.  It knows walking off
the low end because that's always 1.  :)

I'll go back at some later point when I need to be in the code "for real"
and clean up the header stuff so that it holds it in memory until the last
possible moment, so that it can accumulate more gunk from the page as it
starts to figure out the request.

LMK if this doesn't do the trick.

(...) Um, I rate this somewhere between "insanely great" and "perfect". Thanks. Falling off the end is not worth preventing if it introduces delays in the display. When I typed these by hand (modifying the URL digit) I fell off the end too. Thanks (...) (25 years ago, 31-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) I also like this new feature. One thing, how about adding something like an up button between the two numbers that does ?n=,-20&v=c so you can jump back to the index of the group. Paul (at work) (25 years ago, 5-Apr-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
