The ads in the LUGNET Guide pages are ok, they aren’t annoying, it’s a good thing. In the newsgroup pages, instead, I would suggest you to change the ad box with a banner in order to limit the scrolling. Even if LUGNET member, I wouldn’t log in every time just for read the forums (for security reasons I don’t allow any cookies or temporary internet files). This is just a suggestion.

I take issue with this problem of scrolling too. The layout and usability on LUGNET newsgroups has been by far the best of all web-based forums. Although there now arises a need for ad-based support I would ask that the LUGNET admins try to take care not to degrade that high-level of usability.

I did a quick rearrangement of the ad layout and found that you can move the large “billboard ad” up into the newgroup listings header and bring down the thin “tinker tape ad” placing it on the top of the main body. Here is some screenshots of my test

Essentially I just flipped the ad locations. Doing this maintained the old layout where one can see a sample of current messages without scrolling and shows the new ads predominantly displayed.

Now I must confess I am not an official LUGNET member. I posted frequently in lugnet.robotics between 2000 until 2003 but had since moved to different hobbies and jobs. I considered becoming a member but never got around to it. So I guess I have no excuses or right to object. But I think this change would allow for ads and keep the excellent usability I’ve mentioned.
