combinations... very, very nice! I can't wait to see the finished interiors-

WOW! Words can't describe awesome this ship is! You take LEGO spaceship
building to new levels! I love all the details inside the ship, and the
exterior stuff like the engines is great!

I have a feeling a lot of people are thinking the same thing. My gf said
the exact same thing when she saw it... and I didn't realize it until then
but you are all right, there is a lot of the Cygnus shape in the BenGrace.
Not a planned similarity at all, but it was a pretty cool ship, so I guess
there are worse things to be compared to...

for some ODD reason, tripod has deleted my whole account this weekend, and I
no longer have any webpages AT ALL... the pages that have been up for over 3
years, my transformers... my star wars... everything is gone. I have a lot
of it on my computer so I can re-load those pages eventually, but I am
really annoyed! I am waiting to see what they have to say for themselves,
so perhaps they will re-appear soon if I can work it out with Tripod. I
have no idea why they deleted me... I wasn't doing anything against their
TOS. Oh well.

Maybe they had a disk failure? My web hoster (thirteen.net) recently had a
major disk failure, and they had to send the drive off to have data recovery
performed- so my webpage was gone for a while, but eventually restored.
If you haven't heard anything from them, you might want to get in touch with
their tech support and ask what's up.

I wish failure were the case, as that's understandable as happenstance, but
what happened to me was that I signed-in to tripod to upload some files, and
the response I got was something like; "Minispy is no longer a Tripod
member, you have been deleted from our service for violating one of our
Terms Of Service."
And that totally confuses me since all I had on my webpage were pictures of
Lego things... no porn, no MP3s, nothing offensive, nothing copyrighted...
like I said, I am still waiting to see what they say. I emailed them as
soon as I found out this happened. If worse comes to worse I will try to
put up a page here on Lugnet for the BenGrace, but it's just not the same as
having your own webpage. I really liked Tripod's options and size limit.
:( I have some space at Geocities that I don't really use... perhaps I
will put it there.

thanks! I like posting my work here because there are so many people that
make great ships that inspired me to build this ship. When I designed how I
wanted the BenGrace to look, I just thought back on all the aspects I liked
of various ships, and I combined them stylistically into my ship.

Two words:

Simply astounding. Very, VERY good. I only have one comment: regarding
the four rear engine nacelles, I would have prefered them to be more rigidly
attached to the ship like the awesome way that the fore engines are
attached. BUT, that is only my opinion, and they still look very good the
way they are right now. It's something that you have the option to do later
if you feel like it, give the nature of the feature.
But overall, I downloaded the pics and put them up as my background for my
desktop. Your lounges, state rooms, receptionist's desk, etc etc make me
feel like I'm looking at the interior of a posh and expensive hotel, which
is exactly what you wanted to pull off. So I consider this a true success.

I appreciate the critisizm... and while I take your point to the stability
of the engines (there are a couple points where I'd like them to be
"beefier"), there is a structural reason for it. The fore engines are for
forward motion only, and for turning along a plane by firing one side only.
The rear of the ship has 6 engines (the two main engines and the 4 engines
that are not rigidly attached) The two main engines are at the very rear of
the ship and supply the greatest thrust. They are not as noticable as
engines because they are embedded almost fully into the back of the ship.
The 4 engines you refer to are almost exclusively used for manouvering the
ship, they are not very powerful, and they have to be mounted off the ship
to increase their effectiveness.
I'm not trying to change your mind or invalidate your critisizm, just
explaining my reasoning for they way they are :)

I wish I could say I have something even better planned after the BenGrace,
but I think I'm going to go back to building small ships for a while. My
last few projects have been fairly big, and I miss being able to have an
idea in the morning, build in the evening and be done the next day with
pictures.
These monster ships have also thrown my Lego spending habits for a whirl. I
am getting too used to dropping most of my expendable cash into parts that I
feel its going to be very hard to slow down. It's like an addiction in a
way... when I find a sale it's very hard to resist.
When I first got back into buying Lego in the mid 90s, it was only a few
sets that had a lot of good parts in them, but the last 2 years or so I have
bought almost every system set, and with a lot of duplicates too. Even with
sales, its hard to keep that up. Although, if they keep putting out better
and better parts sets (LOM, Ogel Command, SW, etc...) I guess I am at their
mercy!

Whoa! Too cool! That thing is huge!!
Nice work on the interior, and the front hull, very detailed like
everything else.
If you wanted to create a new big ship, but you don't want to wreck that
thing up, I suggest making it into a sort of space privateer, it'd be cool
to militarize. Don't take that the wrong way, I love it how it is! =)

Darn big, too.
I like what you've done with the front of the ship. Those engine nacelles up
there really look good.
So when do you start taking reservations for trips? I've always wanted to

I just finished a couple rooms so I have posted some pics to Brickshelf:

The interior shots are mostly of the finished atrium and the 3rd floor of
the passenger section, which is designed to be like a nightclub, with a
stage for live performances, fully stocked bar, and dancefloor. There is
also a gameroom, with billiards tables, slot machines, arcade games, darts,
and VR game units.
this will be all the pics for short time, as I need to start working on a
webpage for InfinityCruise (my Tripod account is back, yay!) but as always,
any comments pro or con are appreciated, and any questions gladly answered.

Your model is absolutely amazing! The interiors are especially impressive,
perhaps the best I've seen. There's so much room inside, not little cramped
spaces so you really could go for the gusto and show off some beautiful
design and decor. Truly excellent work. Keep it up!

incredibily.... I can't really pick one shot I like more than the others..
they're all awesome.
The pizza ovens in the galley, the chandelier, the arcade (looks like a
place I'd love to get "lost" in for a day or more!), and the glass racks in
the bar are all outstanding.
The magazine/tour brouchure rack in the attrium area is a wonderfully subtle
accent - I didn't notice it right away but couldn't help grining when I did.
Do you have any of the "picture" tiles from the Adventurer's sets? They're
about the right size for a minifig three-fold brochure. ;)
The crew quarters are about as spartan as I would imagine for most space
liners - you captured that very well - though it looks like the unlucky
souls on the second tier of bunks have a pretty tricky accent - or does the
ladder I see beside the stairs on the right side give them access that I
just don't notice in the picture? :)
In the bar area - how did you mount the tables? I know what pieces you used,
but did you use a 2x4 technic plate in the floor to run an axel through to
secure the tables? I haven't played around much with those 'extender' pieces
you used as the table legs, but I didn't think they were narrow enough to
fit between studs? Just me being nosy. ;)
Please tell me you're gonna keep this thing built a while and you're gonna
make more of your "Super Spy" movies with it..!

I have to say that my personal favorites of the details are the chandeliers
in the main hall. They didn't turn out anything like how I planned, that's
probably a good thing. :)

they don't have it easy... you are right. They have to swing around the
corner on the ladder.

No technic plates used. The extender part actually has 4 small grooves in
it's surface that allow you to insert it between 4 studs.

For me, a while is maybe through the end of summer. I have no current plans
to make any more movies with it... sorry. It was a lot of fun to do, but I
am starting to seriously work on a graphic novel that I have been writing
for about 4 or 5 years off and on, and that will be taking up most of my
free time for a while.
I will still be designing with Lego, but it will all be microfig scale sets
and technic scale space vehicles that I am going to use to help me envision
the world that my story is set in.

I'd prefer to let people see it in person. A lot of the things about the
design that I want to show do not come through well in the pictures, and
some things are almost impossible to photograph, like the inside of the
fore-engines, and the cargo hold and automated loading arms.

I think there is a lot to be said for cramped-space designing too. If done
well, efficiency can be just as impressive IMHO. However, ever since I was
a wee lad I have wanted to build massive space ships like we have all seen
in movies etc... As a fellow cap ship builder I'm sure you understand that
desire :)
Bigger is not necessarily better, but it does afford one the opportunity to
include more neato stuff in a design, so I am always trying to build as
large as my accumulation allows.
Also, a cruise ship demands large open spaces, so it was a natural thing for
me to try. I love all the military ships that are being made, especailly
the huge ones, but they don't lend themselves well to the stuff that I
wanted to do right now. I think that's why my first capship, The Elegance,
failed. I was making it like a military ship, but I kept forcing cruise
ship details and esthetics on it.

I'm DEFINITELY going to do that when I get home in May. I decided to come
home for the whole summer rather than try to work in NYC or ehh...northern
CT (if you get my drift), for multiple reasons. Anyways, for all those

True. I found that out trying to build the lavatories on the first carrier
(wish I took more pictures).

Yep, that's the main variable.

I guess you gotta figure the practicality of it. It could still be a
military ship (like Star Trek stuff) but also serve as an exploration
vessel. Your choice to make a leisure vessel was perfect. It showed off your
building style and eye for detail. I think my next ship will serve no
military purpose, just so I can have a stab at more gracious interiors! :)

Joel that thing is incredible, the detailing throughout is incredible. I
was soo busy trying to finish my latest ship i missed lettin you know. I
thought mine was considerably sized, but holy mackrel. The removable sides
really help to display the interior and is an excellent touch. Keep up the
good work.
I thought the interior was pretty well taken care of, so i can't wait to see
what else you can add.
