Hi All,
Im glad to announce a first major change which is visible this time as well.
LUGNET now has a brand-new, area-wide World LUG Map, simply called LUGMap. As
yet the maps enclose 85 entries! Here are the details and how they work:
The LUGMap homepage is located at:
http://www.lugnet.com/map/
There is a plain World View which indicates what kind of User Groups are
present in specific regions. You can click a region on the map or use the text
links beneath to get a more detailed view of this region. Senseful regions are
(as matters stand):
- ca - Canada
- us - USA
- sa - South America
- eu - Europe
- as - Asia
- au - Australia
Each of these regions has its own regional map.
If you just activate a regional map without criteria, it opens with the full
load of entries for this region. You can filter the readout by clicking one of
the links in the Show me-area right below the map. You can explicitly dump
from:
- LEGO Users Groups
- LEGO Train Clubs
- Mindstorms Users Groups
- Event Locations (no entries yet)
- Legolands
- LEGO Brand Stores (coming soon)
- TLC production sites and branch offices (coming soon)
- ALL (not recommened, too much overlapping on the map in some regions!)
All contemplable entries will be displayed (a) in the Search Results-area with
the blackspotted border, right below the Show-me-area and (b) as pushpin
symbol directly on the map.
On the map, you can now see as quick as lightning whether something is in your
area or not. Simply move your mouse over the pins or the surrounding area to
read the name of the club or group.
In the Search Results-area, these entries are listed alphabetically. If the
entry has its own website, the globe symbol is coloured and you can click the
globe to go to the site. If the entry has its own Newsgroup here on LUGNET, the
News symbol is coloured and you can click it to jump into the web area of this
group.
Sometimes you will know the name of a group or club but not where to find it on
the map, especially if the map is overloaded with pins. In that case, just click
the pin symbol of the entry in question in the Search Results-area and all
entries will be removed from the map except the one youre looking for.
Vice versa: If you have located an entry in your area, just click the pin on the
map, and the display is blank except the information to the entry of interest.
Below the Search Results-area, I added 3 links as alternative possibilities to
get similar information. This should be conducive to better interlink all the
different community sites and LEGO resources. You can quickly jump to:
- NELUGs LUGFinder
- LEGOFan.orgs Site Directory
- BrickJournals Event Calendar
From the Other Maps-area you can jump to other regions or back to the World
View. On the bottom of each page is a link back to LUGNET since I have not yet
added any menus or headers.
You can link from anywhere to any of these sites without problems, you have
several options:
http://www.lugnet.com/map/XY/
|
|
...whereas XY is the token of a region (ca, us, sa, eu, as or au). This will
lead to the requested region, showing ALL entries.
http://www.lugnet.com/map/XY/?map_art=ABC
|
|
...whereas you have to replace XY as written in the preceding example and
ABC is the token of a entry class:
- lug = show LEGO Users Groups only
- tlc = Train Clubs only
- mug = Mindstorms Users Groups
- eve = Events
- lld = Legolands
- brd = LEGO Stores
- tlc = TLC offices
http://www.lugnet.com/map/XY/?map_entry=ABC
|
|
...whereas ABC is a Search String, e.g. texlug or TexLUG. (And dont
forget to replace XY too).
Maybe I will add an advanced search option later, but for now I would like you
to have your browsers testing the maps :-) Please report any misbehaviour, so I
can fix it quickly.
Many Thanks to Eric Kingsley who made the original World LUG Map over 5 years
ago, it was a great help, especially by locating the different groups and clubs.
But over the time, the maps became more and more outdated, so I guess it was
time to give it a revision.
Leg Godt!
Rene
PS: Please consider to set FUT lugnet.admin if it has to do with error reporting
and such things. Thank you!

Hi Rene,
Im not able to click on any map regions, or pins. Im using Firefox 2.0. Not
sure why it wouldnt recognise the MAP tag. Are you able to click the image in
Firefox at all?
All the links works fine though - its looking great!

This was because <map id="mapname"> (I guess). Does it work now?

I'm also using FF 2.0 and it wasn't working last night and now seems to be
working.
It might be worth making it a little clearer when you click on the LUG pin
though. I tested on Brazil (the only South American LUG) and didn't think it was
working but realised it was when I clicked on BLTG and all the other pins
disappeared.

Cool features, Rene! Thanks. And Id like the Twin
Cities LEGO® Train Club added to the LTC section if you would. Our location is
pretty much the same as the GMLTC on the map.

Is JLUG actually an in person LUG? I thought it was more of an online
community, akin to Classic-Space, BZPower, FBTB, etc. The two admins, Janey and
Ross, and in Canada and Australia respectively, and the membership is from
accross the globe.

Actually, for clarity sake, it is both an online community and a real LUG, in
fact, a number of times, 3 up to 8 of the members have participated live with
each other in displays and competitions. That is more than some LUGs can say.
Having said that, there are two reasons I do think it should be left off of the
map. I do not think Lugnet is the best place to advertise a place like JLUG
(due to the fact that it does not fall under family values like Lugnet tries to
convey), and also, its online presence like other forums is its primary goal.
On the other hand, I would like to request that the OBB (Ontario Brick Builders)
which is a replacement for Can-Bricks (although never added to Lugnet), as an
official LUG in Ontario. We have unofficially done 4 public shows, and we are
in the process of doing things like designing our own logo, hopefully a webpage,
etc... Currently it has members from ParLUGment, rtlToronto, JLUG, and non-LUG
members as well, and is certainly open to all Ontarians.
If it is possible for you to add the OBB Rene, not only on the map, but also as
a group, I would like to take curatorship of it. Thank you for your
consideration.
Sincerely,
Janey Red Brick

Only Janey could retroactively take the worlds least organized LUG and turn it
into a proper group. :)
Are we counting the spring 2006 show as one of OBBs official events? If so,
that would then be 5 public shows (that one plus four Hobby Shows).
I like how our LUG has non-LUG members. Kind of quirky, huh? ;)

Well yes, you are right about 5 shows, almost forgot last May... once I collect
dates, lists and links, I will get something more official up and posted.
AND yes, and SOME of those non-LUG members sure are quirky! (smile)
I look forward to having our group grow.
For now, this is a call out to all those talented or creative... we are in need
of a LOGO!
Right now you will see, all that is up on our Lugnet section is some red bricks,
and I must say, Rene, or his technical guys did that, I swear, it wasnt me.
Although it sure did give me a good laugh.
As well... I asked about table cloth colours on my Thank you, and recap Hobby
Show post. Im thinking BLACK... for nice photography. White tends to look
BORING, and gets dirty way too easily. Yellow seems a bit bright, would clash
with those gross Hobby Show curtains, as well would be difficult to colour match
at a later date. As well, I want to stay away from red that is predominate with
ParLUG, and JLUG, and I want to stay away from blue which is predominate with
rtl.
Before I start buying bolts of fabric, I would like feedback if anyone is
offended by the idea of black or has a better suggestion.
Thanks,

If you buy black Ill have to rebuild my Take one arrow yet again. What do
you have against my arrows?!? I ask you, what did they ever do to you???
Seriously though, black would work great I think. Most LEGO colors are vibrant
enough to stand out on a black background... with the exception of black arrows
of course.
And yes, black would be easy to match later if needed.

He is... granted. But I thought the real truth was that you actually do most of
the building that he takes credit for. At least thats what you told me. :)
Sadly.... I have just the kind of obsessive personality that might end up making
arrows in as many colors as possible. Doh! Now look what idea youve planted
in my head. Thanks a lot!!
For those who want in on the joke... heres the deal. Before the Hobby Show
exhibit this year I painstakingly built a replica of an arrow out of red bricks,
to place above a tray filled with flyers for the public to take. In other
words, the arrow was pointing down at the flyers.
Janey, who simply didnt repect how much time and effort went into my red arrow,
went out and purposefully bought red table cloths to put on our tables. When
you viewed the arrow from behind the booth you were seeing it against the
background of the concrete floor. However, when you looked at it from the point
of view of the public the arrow almost disappeared into the red background of
the table cloths.
Janey, who remember didnt respect my work to begin with, also didnt believe me
when I told her that I would have to go home the first night and rebuild my
arrow in a different color. Until.... she went out to the front of the booth.
Oh yeah, that does blend in.
And thus was born an arrow of a different color:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2122769
And now you know the rest of the story.
All joking aside, without Janey we wouldnt have had table cloths at all, so it
was great to have them no matter how badly they clashed with my original arrow
design. ;)

I've been meaning to make an official announcement, but I've been waiting on
or web guy to finish moving everything over to the new site. Please be
aware of the following changes in LEGO related clubs in the Arkansas, USA
area:
MSLTC (which was not on your lug map) and
CARLUG (which is on your map) are now encompassed and owned by
ARLUG (http://www.arlug.net) website coming soon.
carlug and msltc has a group on lugnet. How hard is it to change those to
arlug? maybe simply post a topic or something on the sidebar of those groups
pointing to the new lug?
Thanks,

Hi Rob,
Groups for MSLTC and CARLUG are now closed, but still online for reference. I
wrote a short last message there and to the sidebars.
A new group ARLUG is created (you are the curator - congratulations :-)
And the LUGMap is updated.
Enjoy!

Washington state).
PNLTC is a special case: it doesn't really exist any more - except that we
do occaisional Portland/Seattle reunions. I'll defer to Steve Barile and
other PNLTC old-timers on what the real status should be.
You're missing PSLTC (Puget Sound LTC) which is the LTC that grew out of
PNLTC for Seattle etc.

Thanks.
Of course now the Sealug folks will be upset they are somewhere in South
Eastern Washington instead of Seattle.
PNLTC probably should also be moved to halfway between Portland and Seattle
to reflect the center of gravity of the club... (ok, a smidgen East to
account for Matt Chiles...).
Will there eventually be an ability to zoom in further? It would be nice to
be able to make out the locations easier at a regional level.
Hmm, it would also be nice at some point to replace the push pin with some
kind of LEGO element...
Hmm, noticed the event locations. Will this include historic or just
upcoming?
Upcoming and historic:
BrickFest PDX in Portland Oregon
NWBrickCon in Seattle Washington
Historic (and perhaps upcomming):
BrickFest in Washington DC greater metro area
Historic (and probably not recurring):
Mind Fest in Cambridge Massachusetts
BricksWest in Carlsbad California
Kidvention in Carslbad California

The day I started with the new maps and when I designed the pictures, I wasnt
aware of the large number of LUGs, MUGs and LTCs. I thougt it would result in a
similar number as on the old maps. Hindsight is 20/20. Added to the Suggestion

After Jeremys post I intend to move PNLTC
from the list!?

Thought the same, but Im not knowing about an element, which becomes thin as a
needle at the bottom. Any suggestions are welcome.

Im not sure. First, I thought also of historical ones, but this isnt very
useful, at least not on such a map. I think we should add upcoming events only.
Leg Godt!

Perhaps use the Google Maps interface? I know its possible to place arbitrary
pointers on it (with a popout for more details, websites, etc). Should make it
easier to update too, as the data then just becomes an XML file.

Hi Dan,
IMO, real maps like maps.google.com, local.live.com or www.frappr.com always
look somehow unsightly. Theyre good for setting places on a very detailed base,
like showing residences of club members etc.pp. But for a rundown on LUGs and
LTCs, a minimalist map is more handsome (IMO).
Id suggest to add a further zoom level for the US map, especially as most LUGs
are serving a greater area and not a specific city only. If someone finds a LUG
in his area, he will contact them in the group or via email/website anyway.
Of course, I would bow to the majority in the question whether to use a real
map instead the static ones I use at present.
As for the update-thing: First I thought I would just give the old maps an
update in its pictures. Soon there came more and more ideas and I added a plain
text file as database. I guess it shouldnt be a bigger problem to convert
this into XML or to just write a little web-based admin panel in case someone is
willing to maintain the maps in the future.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for all this hard work! I always liked the idea of Lugnet being a
window to physical LUGs. Still not one in Ireland unfortunately...
God Bless,

idea resurrected. I hope this map is easier to keep updated than the old one.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This map really is a leap forward, Rene, thank you.
You've included a representation of the North British LEGO Train Club on the
European sub-map, but this doesn't reflect on the wordwide-map, where the blue
pin for Europe is missing.
With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.
