Here's the reference page for the Train Operating presentation I did at
Brickfest PDX back in Feb, which included a case study of the VLC operating
weekend:

It includes links to the presentation notes (which contain references to
useful track layout design web pages and books), track layout diagrams as
GIF and TDL files, timetables (and related documents), and pictures.
The layout was a large end (yard) to end (yard) with a sneak-through track
between the two yards so we could sit and watch trains running round and
round between operating sessions. Once a layout gets to that size, even a
continuous loop just doesn't feel like 'roundy roundy" any more. Not that
that helps much with your home layout in the 10' x 10' spare bedroom :-)
