You're alright so long as you always build corners that turn right-angles every
time. When you start skewing tracks using curves, or laying tracks through
cityscapes at various odd angles, you sometimes end up short by a little bit.
Half-straights may not always be the geometrically perfect piece to fit, but
they'd be pretty helpful nonetheless.
And let's be honest about large radius curves - for right angles, all you need
do is stick a straight on each end of a regular curve. Large radii look neater,
but one major reason they're a common request is because people are building
longer and longer trains that just can't get round normal corners.
