Well, it seems similar in size and detail to other rail vehicles:

Um... I can't follow that last paragraph. I'm not sure what you mean about
4-wide trains. To my knowledge, LEGO has never offered trains in this width, nor
are they starting to now. And the trains and the baseplates don't need to match,
since the trains don't run on the roads.
Is this a spell-check error? Did you mean 4-wide "lanes" on the roadplates? LEGO
has certainly offered 4-wide lanes on their roadplates for a long time. But the
4-wide cars only fit one person at a time. I think the 6-wides are an
improvement (despite the awkwardness of having trains and cars the same width).
I don't plan on throwing out my 4-wide cars. Is there some reason they can't
share the road with the 6-wides? 6-wide trains can share the rails with 8-wides
(10016).
My understanding is that the new baseplates are designed for what seems to be
LEGO's new standard of 6-wide cars. The two sets you cited as having the old
style are both more than six years old (Main Street is a re-release from 1980).
I don't understand, though, why the new baseplate would go unused in your town.
Most cities have many different styles of roads. Of course, you could also sell
your new-style baseplates on the secondary market, and use the money to buy
old-style baseplates.
What else is in your pile of unused LEGO? I might be interested in some of it...

| (...) Actually LEGO has offered at least one 4-wide train and that was in 1965, prior to the introduction of the track: set 323. The 1966 trainset 111 (with track) has already 6-wide plates, but the engine is 2-wide with a 4-wide cab ;-) Niels (21 years ago, 3-Jun-03, to lugnet.trains)

| (...) Yes, I see your point, but is the rail vehicle worth $10 U.S.? Everyone who is a "trainhead" wants a Level Crossing at $30 but we are hesitant to purchase one at $50. I, for one, don't want a 6 wide baseplate. Why? I've got hundreds of 4 wide (...) (21 years ago, 1-Jun-03, to lugnet.trains)
