At this point I really don't mind what happens to Track Designer, I have
zero time to spend on it. I'm basically going to open it up to the community
and you guys can do whatever you want with the source, modify it, rewrite
it, port it or put the source on SourceForge or whatever.

Personally I don't see any point in moving away from a stand alone C++
Windows app. Most people use Windows and I'm sure we can come up with an
easier way to share layouts/registries across the net without having to
resort to porting it to some other platform. TD needs as much performance as
possible especially if we're considering adding a 3D mode to it.

If it were to be ported to another platform it would be a lot of work since
TD makes heavy use of MFC C++ objects.

Run under linux? music to my ears...

Rather than move to .NET would you (Matt) consider moving it to a more
cross-platform system, such as Java?

While I like Java more than most, that would be a complete rewrite, ne? And
I have to agree with Kevin D. (and Joel, his reference, whom I've enjoyed
reading for years now) that a complete rewrite is hardly ever a good idea.

But then I'm an architect and I like to reuse things that already exist and
work fine whenever possible.

If Matt's agreeable, put the code on SourceForge and let people try to grok
it and add features, but rewrite the whole thing??? Wouldn't be prudent. IMHO.

(...) Uh Oh! This thread got awfully quiet all of a sudden. I take it that means nobody wants to volunteer to create the SourceForge project... If so, I'll reluctantly volunteer to do it because I'd like to tinker with the source myself someday. I (...) (22 years ago, 14-Mar-02, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.cad)
