I agree. A small, standard, off the shelf mold base will cost you, about
3000-5000$. That doesn't even include the cost of the hot runner (or cold
runner depending on the resin and how the part is gated.) Then you have to
machine it. The cost of machining goes up if you have to include siding
cores (required for complicated geometry on some helmets, and other body
parts like legs, arms, torsos and waistlines). Last but not least, TLG
holds an increadible tolerance on their molds, so the price keeps going up
and up.
SO, if you consider that most systems are 4-16 cavity molds, we are talking
much larger costs to mold a new AT-ST driver helmet. Try 10000-30000$ USD.
Nice.
Thought I would put some perspective into it. TLG is choosing to cop out on
this one.
