Ha, I've seen these in the UK, guess they couldn't sell enough in the US.

IT companies in this country actually note the serial numbers down of the
items they sell you. That way, you can only return the one item, and they
know if you try to switch it. I know this does not apply to all Lego (yet),
but the stores could mark their stock with a sticker or UV ink.

I always keep receipts. Call me Scrooge, but after christmas I check to see
if the presents I bought have been reduced. If so, I buy them again and
return on the original receipt so I get presents at sale prices (at the same
store).
Am I a smart shopper or a stealing swindler?
