-snip- etc.
New sites probably wouldnt be made up by the same people. The various other
high-traffic LEGO forums have readerships that partially, but dont totally,
intersect with the Lugnet readership. For some people they choose one forum
because they only want to focus on a particular theme (castle, SW, Bionicle,
Brickfilms). For others they find one newsgroup interface better than another
(threaded vs not, e-mail verification/membership vs not). Some find Lugnet
intimidating/cliquey/anti-kid (either real or imagined) (e.g. FBTB skews younger
than Lugnet, so maybe younger posters gravitate there). Some find that Lugnet
is relatively hostile to their particular theme of choice (Im thinking the
Bionicle folks here). Some are just excited by something new (certainly a
factor in the early rush of posts at classic-castle). Some post in a site for
linguistic reasons (1000steine.de). Some want to avoid marketing, others want
to focus exclusively on it (Bricklink forums). Some forums have value-added
features like updates on news on their theme of choice, contests, member MOC
galleries, etc (FBTB, classic-castle, 1000steine.de, bzpower (I think)).
That said, if the thought was that a new site would invigorate the existing
.space group, Id say dont bother, especially with rumors of future changes at
Lugnet anyway. If a new site might be useful in attracting people that do not
currently post at Lugnet, that might be useful. It would be a lot of work,
though, and would really require a lot of input from the administrators to make
it worthwhile. For the six high traffic forums listed above (and, Im sure, a
couple of others I forgot/dont know) (e.g. does L-draw.org have forums?) there
are probably 100s of dead ezboard forums with a total of six posts each.
On the original question, Im with those that just see this as the normal ebb
and flow, especially post-Brickfest, in a time when there are no new official
releases to spark discussion, and still some lingering anger over the whole gray
issue.

| (...) John, I'm sorry if I seem like I'm comming down on you but you made a nearly identical (URL) post> like this just over a month ago. I guess I find it a bit annoying since you complain about the lack of "community" but your solution is to (...) (21 years ago, 16-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX) !
