Right. You can't do that without destroying the motor.

I autopsied a dead motor. Photos at http://www.crynwr.com/lego-robotics/5225/ .
BTW, the motor shaft has a ten-tooth gear. It drives a 43-tooth gear
connected to a 12-tooth gear. That drives a 37-tooth gear connected
to the quad shaft. Total reduction is 1:13.26
