Thanks, Ben! Coming from you that means a lot!

On the topic of scale. What I’ve determined is the following:

(snip)

Does this align with anyone elses measurement?

I would also be interested in other people’s results/trials. I suppose in a perfect world we could laser scan the parts, but... I don’t know how far we in parts.custom want to venture into Reverse Engineering actual LEGO.. at least publicly! :)

In the ldraw world, everything is modeled with no gap between parts. In the real world, there is a slight gap between parts to ease assembly.

There were a bunch of things I didn’t have time to adjust going from DAT to STL, and I only got to run one set on each machine. Obviously my small attempts at modifying the fits were not enough on some of the parts.

I’ll try your calculations on the next iteration of parts and let you know how they fit - thanks!

BTW, I think Orion uses 1 LDU = .375mm (right, Orion?). I don’t know if he applies this measurement to all part features. Wall thickness (bricks vs. plates) and interior tube size are other big factors, at least I found that out in making my parts.

I’m sure the LEGO engineers have a rapid prototyping machine - wouldn’t it be fun to see what parts they try out?

That would really be awesome! Ronny Sherer told me they have some machines - and I think the Stratasys guys claimed they had LEGO as a client when I spoke to them at SIGGRAPH. Hmmm...I wonder if they’re using Objet polyjets too.. We need a “mole” on the LEGO Inside Tour!

I love the whole process involved in Toy Design - that’s what drew me to LEGO as subject matter for my CAD class in the first place (and of course with LEGO you’re also talking serious Engineering).

Ben, when LEGO hires you, can I come too?

Darrell

(...) Darrell, that's a different Ben. But I think LEGO ought to hire both of them. :-) (20 years ago, 27-Aug-04, to lugnet.cad, lugnet.parts.custom, FTX)

<snip> (...) Way cool! Thanks for sharing. On the topic of scale. What I've determined is the following: the LDU to mm conversion is an exact conversion However: A 1x1 brick is only 7.8mm x 7.8mm and the studs are located 8.0mm for one another (...)
