Hi !

I feel somewhat guilty here. It was my idea to run a Sumo event for a second
year at BrickFest. (Ducks as rotting Canadian tomatoes fly over head :)

There is more to BrickFest competitions than just contestants. For every
contestant, there are probably 25 AFOL (non-Technic, non-Mindstorms folks)
audience members. BrickFest, unlike an rtlToronto event, is not a robo'fest, its
a Legofest. I have managed to show up (as a spectator ;) for one rtlToronto
event and it was a blast. Assuming the pace of life here cools a tad, I intend
on showing up with more than just a camera next time. But BrickFest is more
about showing other AFOLs about whats possible in every avenue of the Lego
habbit than it is about taking part in any specific activity. So we have chosen
to stage events which require 30 seconds or less of explanation to attendees who
show up 'cos they hear the ruckus in Rm 329 and want to know what's going on.
Sumo and Mazes and I hope Pipe Racers are so simply obvious from mere moments of
spectating, that the casual observer will be sucked in to watch the whole event.

From a spectators point of view, there are contestants who are so utterly in
control of the technology, that their 'bots are a joy to watch. There are others
who enter 'bots just for fun - "cos they can" and their antics in "the ring" are
as much fun for the happy owners as they are for everyone looking on.

You have to work hard to create a truely masterful combatant Sumo robot. I think
that numerous public challenges are the only way to hone the skills necessary to
create a truely refined robot.

JB

In the immortal words of my previous expensive hobby - "talk's cheap, let's
race" - just glad I got to do it over and over.

(...) Chris, In the spirit of friendly competition, (as previously suggested by Jeff VW) I'd like to challenge Chris Magno to a robot-building contest. For the last couple months, while most of rtl was talking about trains, "Road Shows" and the (...) (21 years ago, 23-Jul-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
