It's not impossible. One source of inspiration might be the Bridge Builders
episode of Junkyard Wars:

It could be an unfolding device like a modern bridgelayer tank, or possibly
just a platform with small lips that flip out and get you the extra
distance. Another idea could be a leapfrog device that jumps across the gap
(I guess you'd need a LOT of stored energy for the hop) and some degree of
positioning to make sure you weren't leaping off the wrong edge.
As a side note, Chris picked a foot gap with a foot size because it gives
you the possibility of using a diagonal length that's longer than 12 inches.
If we go back to the idea of fitting in a longer shape corner to opposite
corner of that cube, then you're under that 3D pythagoras thing.
