Ever suppose Cameron read "Starship Troopers"?  :-)

Or, "Congo" for that matter (the dual automated machine gun sequence)?

Actually, I always thought they left a perfectly good explanation out -
there should have been a second squad that got left behind due to accident
or missed connections (thus the two drop ships).  Overconfidence works - the
explanation for zillions of military disasters big and small.
