Somebody that manufactures the cable modems and the stuff on the other
side of the pipe :(

Yeah. You figured it out. That's why many people are complaining about
low speed.

Well, the serial port on the modem (it basically resembles an external
modem with a cable jack instead of phone) is still limited to 115k, so
that wouldn't help :( Of course, the gateway currenly is squeezed down
to 56k because of a 16450 UART (Ick.), so I _do_ need to get a new
serial card :)

It's $25-30 or so/mo. Keep in mind that any ISp will charge at least
$15/mo, and phone costs are $1/hr, that isn't bad. And of course, the
other cable modem cxompanies with real cable-modem-technologies charge
$50-55/mo, plus $200-250 to connect you to start.
We're just not in a high competition country, as far as net access is
concerned *sigh*
But still, I get 24 hour connectivity, and I run my own email server
here, and stuff like that.
