RPGamer (URL) just posted an article on the Playstation 2. Some highlights of what was reported (paraphrased of course) follows. The Playstation 2 will use DVD media (it can play DVD movies and music, too!) and will be backwards compatible with (...) (26 years ago, 2-Mar-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Okay, technology is *officially* moving too fast for me now. I still have fond memories of playing Pong (and I was quite good at it, too. Undefeated, as I remember. Yeah, that's it. (...) That must be some 'puter! Not a desktop machine, to be sure. I've got a feeling that to keep costs down, the PSX2 is going to be sold barebones. $300 for a unit plus one controller. Yeah, but you don't HAVE to spend $1500 to get a computer that will play games better than any console anymore, especially when you remove the price of the monitor (which you should, since you can't play a console without a tv). (...) Don't get me started on the cost of 3d accelerators. :) As an early adopter I paid $600 for my 2 12mb voodoo2 cards. Now the same thing can be had for less than $250, I think. (...) I own a PlayStation, and the only thing that I have to add to Computer v. Console, is that Console is about 1/10 the price of a computer. So, dollar for dollar, a Console will be tops. (...) True, true. I didn't put together a budget computer, btw. I just knew where to get parts cheap and I saved money doing it myself.
