I'm not telling anyone what they should and shouldn't do, nor is Larry; in
fact, I'm enjoying the debate insofar as I recognize it to be insoluble.
However, Larry and I are pointing out (correctly, I might add) that the
argument will not be settled here and that the argument, in that context, is
pointless. The issue itself is obviously not pointless, especially given
the depth of feeling conveyed by many involved with it. However, since one
camp has resolutely decided on conception as the beginning of meaningful
life, and another camp has decided equally resolutely that life begins at
some point thereafter (24 weeks, the onset of brain function, etc.), and
since no one from either side is going to concede the point, the debate is
doomed to fail simply because the assumptions are in dispute. It's not even
a matter of "agreeing to disagree;" it's a matter of agreeing that the two
camps aren't arguing about the same thing.
