I'm curious if anyone can shed light on what "AUK" is

AUK is defintely alt.usenet.kooks.  I have spent some time there myself, it is
definitely a flame group.  The entire purpose of the group is to ridicule,
well, "usenet kooks".  People that post there generally get there in one of two
ways- either they go there purposefully to flame away [1], or they end up
getting dragged in there because someone else *thinks* they're a kook.  Given
some comments Matt made (I'm far too lazy to look for the exact post) along the
lines of how he interacted with the group, he probably ended up as the latter.

and why anyone would
want to harm the LEGO community.

Ah, based on his comments, it would seem he had an idea for a website, and felt
burned because no one seemed enthused about it.  He said something about an
"instruction website", and way back in the recesses of my mind, I remember
someone posting somewhere (whether it was here or RTL I have no idea) about
wanting to start an instruction website that had current sets on it as well...
of course, people explained to him the nature of Brickshelf's agreement with
Lego, and how fragile it is, and that it just wasn't a good idea.  I have no
idea if this is what Matt was talking about or not, but it definitely seems
Matt feels spurned by the LEGO Community, and sought to prove what nasty evil
people we all are.

Also curious if anyone gets the impression
that Matthew might truly be dangerous or if he is just blowing steam.

Well, uh, I have to admit, if some of the posts he made were directed at me,
I'd be a bit worried.  Frankly, he does seem to be a little, uh, unbalanced.
You have his IP address, why not see if you can use it to narrow down his
geographical location?  If he's not near you physically, I wouldn't worry too
much about it.  If he's in the same metropolitan area, I'd definitely be more
concerned.

And, of course, his direct comments about the frailty of the NNTP server are
something you could defintely take to the FBI in any case.

(...) D'oh! I forgot my own footnote. [1] I was there to flame. I enjoy flaming people. I don't think it's a big crime, especially if you keep it to places where it's appropriate, such as alt.usenet.kooks, alt.flame, ne.internet.services (circa (...) (...) Matthew's posting privileges are now disabled (to all groups) after the past round of abusive messages he posted. Lord knows if he's the same person who identified himself/herself at "Madhatter" in RTL last year, but there's been plenty enough (...)
