1250 - 1550(ish) these little cogs were just ships, with no specialised
armament. Equipped with mock castles at each end (from which fo'c'sle, or
forecastle comes), combat generally consisted of moving the 'castles' close
enough to each other to start flinging arrows, rocks, rotten food, quicklime,
chickens, bengal tigers - whatever came to hand really. Ships were seldom
sunk by battle damage, they were more often taken by boarders.

I have been a bit out of the impulse sets loop. I'm a bit crook today (read:
feeling too feeble to be bothered with going back and researching the answer
to my question, which as an otherwise good boy I normally would) - do the
impulse sets include anything in the way of the new soldiers (with the chapeau
de feu)? And this is a BigW thing, right?

Barely baldly going at all....
