Best Lego Year of all time? —Stéphane Simard
While I was browsing the catalogs, I had this idea... I'd like to know what the consensus is as to which year saw Lego as truly the TOP of its game. After browsing the Brickshelf catalogs, I'd have to say 1980. Second batch of models for Technic (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-03, to lugnet.general) !

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —John Neal
(...) 2003. By far and away. You have Mindstorms, LEGENDS, bulk bricks, MOC series, licenses, new colors... the list goes on. The past pales in comparison IMO. I really believe that the present is the golden age of LEGO. JOHN (21 years ago, 25-Feb-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Stéphane Simard
(...) I didn't see any new Mindstorms product announced for 2003. I don't see Lego still producing Classic Space sets. I don't see Lego currently producing any Technic sets with classic studded beams. (apart from 8431 crane truck, of course) I don't (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —David Eaton
(...) Very interesting. Using Lugnet set rating data as of September 16th 2002, I played around with the numbers a bit. In fact, I made a graph of average set rating for given years: (URL) (1) Notice how things are on an upward trend until 1975, (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-03, to lugnet.general) !

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Stéphane Simard
(...) That graph is very interesting. I also find it not that surprising that Juniorized sets appeared just as studless beams/liftarms started to become the norm for Technic sets. (...) Go ahead then. Name the best year for each theme :-) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —David Eaton
(...) Yup. Technic was just about at its strongest until 1997, I'd say. (...) Hmm... the slightly more major themes: Adventurers - 1998. 2003's selection is good, but... awfully Juniorized. Aquazone - 1995. It was all downhill from there. Castle - (...) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Matt Canales
(...) Okay, so you're right about the 1998 thing, but 2003 are you crazy?!?!?! :) I don’t want to buy the Orient Expedition sets, they look dumb. (...) Hey! I like the Stingrays! :) Although I can see what you mean a little... Anyway, Aquasharks (...) (21 years ago, 26-Apr-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Mike Petrucelli
(...) Well now that is kind of interesting. I always thought most people liked the trans-yellow better than the neon green. I know I do. I wonder what other people think about that? -Mike Petrucelli (21 years ago, 27-Apr-03, to lugnet.general, lugnet.space)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Rick Hallman
(...) *smacks the young padawan of little BT1 knowledge* Blacktron 1 will always beat out Blacktron 2. One of the reasons is that BT1 have a flight suit, while BT2 have a "B", how do they stay strapped in? Trans Yellow is also a much more better (...)           Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Spencer Nowak
(...) Yup. 1987 was the year in which the best thing happened for lego space....I was born. Really though, B1 is far above the other space themes, mostly cuz the cool 'figs. Star wars remains a pretty good line nowadays. Click hinges, new colors, (...) (21 years ago, 27-Apr-03, to lugnet.general, lugnet.space)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Tobbe Arnesson
(...) After finding part# 817 Trailer for Legoland Car ( (URL) ) in a pile of used LEGO I could argue juniorization has been around far longer then '97. '88 in this case. I'm sure there are more examples. Though I wont argue this point since I too (...) (21 years ago, 28-Apr-03, to lugnet.general)

1993. 4547 railroad club car (great train car) 6048 majestos magical workshop (pretty good castle set, I still think Majesto is a cool figure) 6286 Skulls Eye Schooner (second best pirate ship of all time behind the Black Seas Baracuda) 6398 Central (...)      (...) uh huh huh, you said: "stiffies." Uh huh huh, huh. Dave I hope that TLG never reaches the TOP of its game because that way the product will always be improving. (21 years ago, 26-Feb-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Michael Arrighi
(...) Wow! What an interesting topic. I think 1987 was a fantastic year for Legoland town sets. There were a lot of terrific new releases at that time such as 6393, 6379, etc. Additionally, there were also plenty of mid 80s sets that were still (...)         Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Chris Ernest Hall
(...) I've always thought 1990 was a great year for Lego. M:tron, town airport sets, resturant, the original space shuttle, airport monorail, the ghost minifig and new castle, the Italian resturaunt, probably my personal favorite fire station set in (...)          Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Stéphane Simard
(...) I would say, '86 to '95. At least as far as Technic and Town are concerned. I personally put *ALL* of the blame of 1997's quality decline to 1) 1995 and 1996's sudden mass popularity of PC games and 2) the advent of the Internet. Which really (...)         Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —John P. Henderson
(...) I think this question has popped up before in some form or another. But it's the fun sort of topic that is always good to revisit. My 2 cents...         Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Daniel Jassim
Wow, good topic! Although the entire 80's seemed really great, I started collecting Lego in 1991 so it's hard to rate the years before. So I'd have to say 1999 was my favorite year. The Star Wars line did it for me since Lego not only released (...) (21 years ago, 27-Apr-03, to lugnet.general, lugnet.space)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Nathan Wells
Hmmmmm...... I find amusing that nearly everyone states that 1988 was the best year for LEGO. I really can't agree or disagree because I had just been born! ;-) I have to say that 2002 - 2003 is (and will be) the best year for LEGO. In 2002 I did (...)         Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Max Maxwell
(...) I would have to say 1994 just because of the 8880 Supercar, the best Lego model EVER! Well maybe not best but most technologically advanced. I'd also have to say 2001. Robotics Invention System, 8466 4x4, 8458 Formula One Racer, 8457 Power (...) (21 years ago, 28-Apr-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Tobbe Arnesson
(...) My vote goes for 1991 or 1992: (URL) Team was great that year. I think I've started a fixation for Model Team sets... Technic wise '97 was a good year with large and cool models like 8479, 8480 and the 8880. My vote for "best year since I gave (...) (21 years ago, 7-May-03, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Matthew Crandall
(...) I love looking through the archives...! Best year(s) for LEGO? I'd say the early-mid 1970's! No minifigs (and I like the minifig!), nice, big gears--"Expert Builder" wasn't out yet--no themes, either (unless you count the "LegoLand" series as (...)         Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Allan Porter
(...) Very cool topic dude! Well my focus is mainly on technic but I also like pirates and modle team. It's really hard for me to pick a year. In 1988 there was the 8865 (test car) which was great. In 1993 the skulls eye scooner (is that even (...) (17 years ago, 11-Feb-07, to lugnet.general)

Re: Best Lego Year of all time? —Stephen Hurn
(...) It is very interesting that everyone is saying how juniorisation started killing lego in 1997. That was about the exact time I slipped into my dark ages (it was also the year I was 14). Anyway I seriously believe that 2007 is going to be the (...) (17 years ago, 12-Feb-07, to lugnet.general)
