No, sorry... it's not an official LEGO contest.  Though wouldn't it be
interesting if it was?  No, let's think of this more like a fantasy baseball
league.  You can draft any piece you want into your tub, in any colors
and/or quantities you want.  But... just to make it a bit more balanced, why
not see if you can provide some sort of marketing rationale for your tub.
In other words, why would people want to buy the 1000 pieces you put
together into your dream tub?

Anyone else want to join in this little fantasy design session?

A great idea!  My only wish is that it's for sale discounted, and available
for $19.97 like the 4107 here in Canada where I can drive to my local
Zellers

Is the 4107 really available at Zellers stores in your area?  Or is this
wishful thinking?  As far as I have seen in the London/Stratford/Kitchener
area, they are only available at Toys 'R Us or Bricks & Blocks in St.
Jacob's (formerly the 'Countryside Toy Outlet')

and pick one up instead of paying $30 USD for it, then shipping,
then waiting two weeks for it and dodging the mail carrier and ultimately
having to drive to the post office to pick it up.  None of this Shop@Home >stuff.

I agree 100%.  I should have mentioned that this tub would have to be
available in retail stores.  Grabbing the attention of young and old
builders alike happens as they stroll the toy asiles; of that I'm still
convinced.

I was going to mention price in my original thread, but then I hesitated.
The 4107 is a good deal.  Is it the best deal ever? No, probably not.  But
is it a good deal compared to certain bulk packs from Shop At Home?  Yes, it
certainly is.  What I would like from the company is an explanation as to
why bulk packs are so ^$&#%@* expensive compared to assorted buckets and tubs.

Quick math assignment:

4107 tub = 1000 pieces selling for $30.00 (CDN) at full retail.
That equals about .03 cents a piece.  Great deal.

3458 Black 2x4 bulk bricks = 50 pieces selling for $10.80 (CDN) and only
through Shop At Home.
That equals about .21 cents a brick!!!  Not such a great deal.

And yet... the bulk pack is shipping from the company, no middle-man or
markup involved.  It's in flimsy, easily torn packaging.  Compared to the
assorted tub which is in a container that would make the Tupperware or
Rubbermaid people hang their heads in shame.  And I can get those at Toys 'R
Us, who must be taking a cut some where along the line.

So why are bricks sold as 'bulk' pieces seven times more expensive than
those sold in assorted tubs.  The bottom line of my argument is, "why can't
there be some happy median?"  Why not raise the price of assorted tubs
slightly and then offer more widely varied selections and colors?

At the same time, drop the price of bulk bricks; likely selling more
quantities and continuing to make huge profits?

Does anybody who works for LEGO actually shop for LEGO products the way the
rest of us have to?  If so... haven't any of you seen this crazy incongruity
in your pricing scheme?

Sorry, didn't mean to rant.  That's why I left this argument out of the
original message.  I wanted it to be a shiny happy posting.

All the best,
Allan B.

(...) Uh, no, actually, my typo. But the $19.97 4107 is still available at Toys R Us. I got like six when they first went on sale, but AFAIK the sale is still on. But my complaint is really that I want to be able to drive to it and buy it after work (...) (22 years ago, 18-Dec-02, to lugnet.general)
