this is a good question.
i've been publishing instructions on my site for a few years now. at the
beginning i wondered if i should sell the instructions and even wondered if
there would be demand (folks buy the official models, have all of the necessary
pieces to make alternates, so why not pay a little more to be able to make
something other than the original model?).
i'd feel a little guilty to start charging folks now, though most of the
instructions are no longer available (thanks to xoom.com). plus i got a nice
sense of pride thinking people could see/build/appreciate/denigrate the designs
i came up without having to cough up money for it (it gave me a wider audience).
STILL taking the time to recreate a design in a cad program, then going through
the publishing process does often seem like a thankless task, especially when
you get little or no feedback (though i know there are fans out there).
i'm watching this discussion with interest, not so much for the legal aspects
but to see what other creators or fans of designs have to say.
