Has anybody ever sold just instructions for an MOC they'll built.

If so are there any legal ramifications of doing so, especially in the
context of using LDraw/MLcad to generate the images?

In general, no.  But in your case, I suspect there is a problem.  Not
with LDraw/MLcad, but with the fact that you are modeling a toy with
its own copyright and trademark issues.

I don't think that Robotech toys or other products are currently being
produced, but *someone* owns the rights, and if they should happen to
find out about you, you could be the target of anything ranging from
cease-and-desist orders from their lawyer to a lawsuit.

I would suggest you consult an intellectual property attorney before
proceeding.

If this is the case, then how are the 'Bricksmiths' getting by?  Don't they
use the same LEGO bricks in their sets?

Could you explain how you see these two situations as being similar?

If I understand what William says in his post he is saying there may be an
issue with Sun making models of some sort of trademarked toy - Robotech.
Meaning literally that whoever owns those rights might take exception of
some form to Sun creating models of them in this (or any other) medium.

I don't know anything about Robotech toys but that seems to make sense -
just as it would make sense that the Tennessee Titans or the NFL might take
issue with you if you decided to sell toys built out of Lego bricks (or out
of clay, for that matter) depicting their trademarks.

But how is that similar to the kits produced by the GoB?  Kevin uses "the
same LEGO bricks" in his models, which, as far as I know, do not depict a
trademarked building or design.

Am I missing something, or did you misunderstand William and think that the
problem could be that Sun is using LEGO bricks to make his models?

(...) I saw this paragraph and thought William was referring to LEGO as the 'toy'. My mistake. (...) I missed this paragraph somehow in my initial read. Ooops. (...) Precisely. My mistake entirely. I apologize again. Regards, Allan B. (23 years ago, 19-Dec-01, to lugnet.general)
