If I may jump in here with a thought of my own...  All of the new subthemes
have too short a shelf life and try to throw too much in a single set ( who
among us can afford ALL of the larger sets?) which seems to destroy the idea
of LEGO building.  The old TOWN theme, CASTLE and SPACE had mostly sub $40 USD
sets designed to be combined in sort of modular play.  Each one had something
special that you may want without blowing the whole wad on one box.  They
revolved around making up your own little LEGO world for these cute yellow
headed people to live happily in (honestly didn't they just look so happy?).
When did all this change?  LEGO began to change this with the introduction of
firearms in the Pirate theme (a personal favorite, and very popular).
Suddenly LEGO people were begining to show battle scars and a loss of appetite
for peaceful life.  Only the Imperial Trading Post had ANY sort of day in the
life value, and how many of us purchased a Pizza Restaurant just to get some
village parts and a wench who wouldn't steal your gold (hearts, maybe).  LEGO,
reintroduce some daily life to the themes, cut out juniorization, more sets at
lower prices with more pieces, blend themes together for cross purchases and
stop discontinuing sets and themes after only one year!  LEGO just needs a
town or a rest stop between battlezones.  Pizza anyone?

According to an article in ID magazine, March/April 2000, Lego posted its
first loss since the companies founding in the 1930s. The article contends
that this is due in part to the widely expanded theme product line.

Honestly, is this really a big deal? I am most interested in getting cool
parts to make cool custom creations...

I've noticed some disturbing trends.

1.  Theme logos are no longer used- the old Castle flag, the red & white TOWN
roadsign, the word SPACE in white against a starry background.  Very familiar
logos I'd like to see brought back.  Now we just have subtheme logos, and a • lot
of them.
2.  Many favourite Themes have been killed off already- Pirates, Western,
Aquanauts, and Space are history.  Star Wars (new), Adventurers (new), Town,
Castle and Trains are the only ones left.  The fate of Underground is • uncertain
at this point, but it won't last to 2004.
3.  Themes will often feature only a single subtheme at a time.  New • subthemes
seem to requrie the discontinuation of old ones.  There is very little • overlap
between figures in different subthemes, and the theme lack a sense of unity.
4.  Subthemes that are switched annually and run for very brief periods of
time, making the theme look worse as a whole.  I hate this.  Why can't we • have
a Green Ninja Fortress in 2000?
5.  Box changes that seem out of the theme.  A Knights Kingdom box doesn't • look
like a Castle box, and that is just wrong.

Are we going to have only subthemes in the new century?

(...) Yes! I love the concept of making sets with li'l technic-pin connectors so you can buy a few of them and rearrange them into a larger, more varied castle, space base, pirate hideout, etc. etc. I wish they'd get back to this. (...) I don't mind (...) (24 years ago, 4-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)

(...) The worst subtheme for this is the new Race range. 5919 Turbo Tiger was designed to play with the 6602 Scorpion Buggy. 6602 Scorpion Buggy was designed to play with the 5919 Turbo Tiger. 6616 Rocket Dragster was designed to play with the 6714 (...) (24 years ago, 4-Oct-00, to lugnet.general)
