Ever think that perhaps you have grown up around the ideals that came out of
the Tolkien universe? And perhaps maybe people who grew up in different
cultures, such as the Japanese, think their literary works of the past are to
yawn about and that the Tolkien universe is where its at. I mean, come on man,
when you list that a genre uses elves, dungeons and medieval architecture, you
can only be referring to the Tolkien style of literature, because all those
different ideas came out of EUROPE! I mean, come on. The Aztecs never once
used medieval architecture because medieval architecture ONLY existed in
Europe. The Japanese population probably didn't even know what medieval
architecture was until the middle 1900's. Tolkien and his ilk had genuine
innovations, the only reason you don't think so is because you grew up around
them so they are common place. I guarantee you that the Japanese fanatasy
genre is much older than Europes, which would make Tolkien and his ilk the more
modern innovators! They didn't call them the dark ages for nothing, a time of
the stagnation of learning. It held back Europe while the rest of the world
moved on with its' literary masterpieces. The rest of the world was able to
establish their fantasy creatures and styles long before Europe did. The ONLY
reason you like the Japanese fantasy genre more is that its a newer thing to
you. However LEGO is interested in one thing. Making money. So they sell to
a EUROPEAN audience, who grew up with Tolkien. And I would guess that all the
castle sites that are Tolkien-esque would be ones run by people of European
decent. Beyond that, they are working through a medium designed for a European
feel. So in the end, what do you get? Tolkien-esque sites made by people who
grew up with Tolkien-esque ideas using a Tolkien-esque medium in which to
manifest their creative Tolkien-esque thoughts. And what's wrong with that?
What is space? It's the same thing over and over again as well, just like
castle. Spacecraft, laser guns of some sort or another, humans and / or
alieans vs humans and/or aliens. You ALWAYS have your prototype
fastest/biggest/strongest vehicle that will bring doom to your enemies,
you always have your main character(s) who not only is a sure shot but
also can fly any vehicle put in front of him. Granted, space is more flashy,
but its one thing to defeat an opponent by blowing him up with your cliche'
ultimate beam cannon, while its quite another to defeat him through fair hand
to hand combat. Show me a man who choses a sword over a gun and I'll show you
a man with guts and honor.
Anyway, thats my four cents
