In my opinion, the whole rendering system should be made Direct3D

No, this is a bad idea, in that it would lock up the software to MS and
make it much more difficult to use under other platforms (read linux+wine)

although that I know will create problems with culling. What really bugs
me though is the EXTREMLEY difficult-to-use 3D rotaton. What happened to
any kind of coordination at all? Not to be rude or insulting, because
the rest of the program is great...the 3D view messes it up. I'm used to
using programs like 3D Studio Max and ZModeler <http://www.zmodeler.com>
which all have correct view rotation.

Agreed, I like the way the 3d view controls from autocad works. however,
there's nothing I can do about it because... (see below)

If you were so inspired, you could write a replacement.

true, but some other option would make much more sense... (see below)

I think that non-programmers/engineers have no idea how much work goes into the
development of a program like MLCad.  The world would be a nicer place if users
appreciated the developers of the free LDraw family software more, rather than
just complain.

agreed, but there is one thing that prevents programmer types like
myself to do that, and that is ... (see below)

[snip]

Undoubteldy it is just the way Michael designed it.  Often users seem to think
that because a program is not designed the way they expect it that the program
is buggy (listening Ahui?). When the program does not work the Michael intended,
it is a bug.  When people want the program to work differently it is an
enhancement request.

yeah, agreed (see below for more... the suspense goes on...)

3D graphics involves a lot of matrix algebra mathematics.  There is more than
one way to represent a 3D space given the same dimensioned matrix.  The late
James Jessiman, who created the LDraw file format, chose one form of
representation.  Since then the CAD industry has chosen a different form as
standard.  Tough to call it *wrong* when there were multiple viable choices.

There *are* things that I'd like to be different in MLCad, but that does not
make them bugs.

you could change that if... (see below...)

I'd like zoom mode to be accessible by pressing and holding a key, and when you
let go, you go back to the normal edit mode.  This is a feature enhancement
request, not a bug.

For me both bugs and enhancement requests are appreciated, as long there is a
tone of overall appreciation of the donation of my free time to the program
development.

Kevin

see, the thing that prevents you to do all that is that Michael is the
only person able to do anything on the program, and this is a bottleneck.
The application would gain much more beef if it was truly free (in
either the GNU/GPL sense, or the wider "open source" sense), so that
anyone with skills could modify the program for anyone else's benefit.

As long as Michael jealously guards the source to the application like
he does

1) lots of features or enhancements will not be added to the application
mostly due to lack of time
2) we will have to resort to hacks (wine on linux, for instance) to get
the application to run on other platforms.

this message is a call to Michael to see the true benefits of open
source/free software and release the source code to MLCad to the
community, so we can help him

hope this message will be read by Michael

Sincerely

Amaury

(...) Gotta agree, I'd HATE to see that happen. It's already a pity the new track designer program most likely won't work under Wine (since it uses much of .NET from what I read in the announcement) let's not let this one go please.
