Well, Matt, my take on the whole antimecha flame war is this: You either get
it or you don't. Mecha has quite a bit in common with space and spaceheads
like you and I understand mecha much easier than trainheads do. Townies tend
to admire the work that goes into building a mecha, but won't make an
attempt to build one themselves as it isn't their type of building. Pirate
folk seem to be the same way. The only ones who really don't understand
mecha (usually) are castleheads as mech building seems to be so far removed
from their realm of creating that it's tough to comprehend what mecha
builders are doing. There are, of course, exceptions to this. Chris
Maddison, Anthony Sava, Jeff Johnson all come to mind, but I'm certain there
are others.

Keep in mind that mecha building is one of the most complex types of
building simply because of the goals set forth by the builder. Some folks
like to build mecha models (Mladen Pejic, Sun Yun). Some try to compact a
model as much as possible (Jeremy Sproat, Chris Maddison). Some try to push
the design barrier in creating new forms and colors (me, Bryce McGlone,
Stuart Immonen). Some push the technical limits of Lego (Eric Sophie, Brian
Cooper, Chris Snead). There are so many possible variables involoved in
successful mecha creation that many outside the medium just don't comprehend
where we are coming from. In this way mecha building and Mindstorms creating
and space building are quite similar.

We can continue to respect and draw inspiration from other types of
creating, but until Lego actually supports and makes their own Mecha theme
(something I hope they never do), we will be the outcasts of Lego building.

Build well,
-Dave 'Lego Mecha' Johann

Having been busy with BricksWest, I haven't had a chance to be very active here, let alone the rest of LUGNET (or build anything new, for that matter). I just wanted to tip my hat to some of the wonderful creations that have been introduced here (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)
