A recent development that I found slightly disturbing though was the thread
(cum flame war) about avatar images at BrickShelf. Several posters stated
their distaste for mecha as displayed at BrickShelf when providing examples
of things they didn't like seeing there. What is up with that? Was anyone
else aware of this dislike of the mecha models? I thought the genré was well
accepted, myself...especially given the almost total "fan-only" mentality of
the overall theme (i.e. LEGO doesn't really do mecha...the small group of
fans making MOCs is the only real action in mecha). Anyway, weird, huh?

You know, it is.  I'm not sure why but I'll venture a guess.  As with
anything you have purists.  Legos mean ______  to some people and when
confronted with a new idea it gets rejected by the collective that belives
the absolute.  Sound stupid?  Remember Galileo?  Many artists have been
shamed into an early retirement, or death only to have their work realized
for the genius that it is fifty or a hundred years later!

My opinion is simple.  Lego is a medium.  MOCs are art.  I love it all.
Buildings, Trains, Mecha/Mechs, Castle, Microfig, Sculpture, it's all
fantastic.  This is a collective of artistic individuals and all of our work
is worthy of respect.  Also worthy of critique, such as it should be with
artists.

As for why I love doing Mechs so much? (I do Mechs, not Mecha.  My creations
are nowhere near that elegant ;-)) The callenge of it.  Try sometime to
perfectly ballence fifteen pounds of Lego on two three inch patches.  Now do
it with reverse knees.  And make it move, realisticly.  Without collapsing
on itself.  Now that you've mastered how to construct reliably and
consistantly, add style.  Make it look appealing.  Or better yet, be clever.
Add a cockpit, engine, and opening bays.  Now you're becoming a better
mech/mecha builder.

For those that don't know me:  (more on the way BTW)

I just wanted to tip my hat to some of the wonderful creations that have
been introduced here lately by Chris, Stuart, Mladen, Geordan and others. So
much excellent work from so few builders...this certainly is a prolific
group (and this leads me to believe that the Mecha session at BricksWest
will be an AWESOME event).

Do you know I've been loosing sleep over this...  We're getting together up
here to put some stuff together to add to your show.  If the Gods will make
the planets align I may just make it down there.  I sure hope so.  If not I
will be envious of those that get to see the displays.

Build ON!

Having been busy with BricksWest, I haven't had a chance to be very active here, let alone the rest of LUGNET (or build anything new, for that matter). I just wanted to tip my hat to some of the wonderful creations that have been introduced here (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)
