Ok let me step into this one since I just happened across the thread via the
web interface.

I have no idea what "Mecha" is or are, I see these creations that y'all post
to brickshelf and such, but I still don't know what really makes a mecha a
mecha. Are they vehicles for people to ride in and control, or are they
robots? Where does the theme come from? Is it from a line of comics, books
or tv shows? The only thing I have to use is a reference is the old Ultra
Man shows I used to watch as a child (shows my age huh?) or the Power Ranger
movies my son enjoys so much. I guess I'm just out of the loop on the whole
mecha thing.

Quote from the Starship Modeler mecha page
(http://www.starshipmodeler.com/mecha/mechintro.htm):

"An obvious component to the stable of sci-fi vehicles are "mecha". While the
strict japanese definition covers anything mechanical, for our editorial
purposes we'll define "mecha" as manned power suits and giant robots. A
Japanese import, mecha became popular in the States during the 80's, through
translated (and often extensively re-written) TV shows such as Voltron and
Robotech. Since then, the concept has been accepted into many western sci-fi
creations.

Of all Japanese mecha, those from the Gundam series of movies and TV shows are
far and above the most enduring and extensive. But the number of mecha-related
shows (and their associated models) is dizzying... and we're happy to cover any
and all of them!"

For *me*, a mecha is anything that mimics animal OR human movements AND has
moving appendages OR limbs. This is a crappy definition, but it's the best that
I can do. ;-)

Mladen Pejic, over and out!

Now at the same time let me say that I wouldn't suggest that the mecha
community has less of a role on LUGNET than do the trains, space or castle
people. I think may of the creations show a very imaginitive use of LEGO,
but I think I'll stick with trains and let y'all handle the mecha.

Having been busy with BricksWest, I haven't had a chance to be very active
here, let alone the rest of LUGNET (or build anything new, for that matter).

I just wanted to tip my hat to some of the wonderful creations that have
been introduced here lately by Chris, Stuart, Mladen, Geordan and others. So
much excellent work from so few builders...this certainly is a prolific
group (and this leads me to believe that the Mecha session at BricksWest
will be an AWESOME event).

A recent development that I found slightly disturbing though was the thread
(cum flame war) about avatar images at BrickShelf. Several posters stated
their distaste for mecha as displayed at BrickShelf when providing examples
of things they didn't like seeing there. What is up with that? Was anyone
else aware of this dislike of the mecha models? I thought the genré was well
accepted, myself...especially given the almost total "fan-only" mentality of
the overall theme (i.e. LEGO doesn't really do mecha...the small group of
fans making MOCs is the only real action in mecha). Anyway, weird, huh?

So, that's it for now. I'll be posting some new information about the
BricksWest mecha session soon (today-tomorrow).

Matt
